What was IFC’s Rationale? The IFC leadership at KU wants to demonstrate a strong commitment to the health and safety of our Sorority and Fraternity community. During the 2017-18 academic year, IFC leadership has watched closely what has been happening at peer institutions, while also evaluating the health and safety of our community. In late fall, the IFC hired Dr. Gentry McCreary to work with individual chapters on hazing prevention in their new member processes, which highlighted challenges we face as a community. IFC is committed to fostering a community that lives up to its values of scholarship, friendship, leadership, and service. After extensive reflection and conversation in recent months, IFC determined that the only way to ensure all organizations are committed to and aligned with these shared values is to institute a selfimposed, temporary freeze for the IFC community for the remainder of the spring 2018 semester to allow time to develop a strategic plan for sustainable success. Chancellor Girod shares his support for IFC’s decision. What are the desired outcomes of this suspension? We wish to establish a strategic plan that includes higher standards to which the IFC community will commit to holding itself. These standards will focus on increased measures for health, safety, and wellness, self-governance, new member development, the full membership experience, and recruitment. This plan will be developed in partnership with IFC chapter stakeholders, including undergraduate members, Housing Corporation Boards, advisors, alumni, KU administrators and national stakeholders to ensure increased transparency, accountability and support. What does Suspension of Social Events mean? • • • • • • • • All social events with alcohol are suspended for the remainder of the spring 2018 semester effective immediately. Chapters who have planned events involving alcohol must cancel them including contracted events at a third-party vendors (overnight accommodations, bars, restaurants, etc). Individual members shall not take on chapter events under their name, or they will assume the liability to their personal insurance and violate the terms of this Self-Imposed Temporary Freeze that could effect of the return of a chapter’s full privileges. IFC Chapters are allowed to continue to host brotherhood events without alcohol and individuals participating shall not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs or intoxicated. All such events must be registered with and approved by the IFC. IFC Chapters are allowed to continue host philanthropic events and engage in community Service. All Philanthropic events are to be alcohol free and all attendees shall not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs or intoxicated, and must be approved in advance through the IFC Philanthropy Event Notification Form.
