While California puts the brakes on innovation and change with more bureaucracy and more reguiation, Arizona is paving the way for new technology and new businesses. City?s terrain, weather, chaotic parking make it perfect for trying technology, company exec says By Aaron Aupperlee The car took control with the push of a button. Mathew Priest, the Uber employee in the driver?s seat who was no more than a passenger at this point, took his hands off the wheel and foot off the pedal as the car drove itself east on the 31st Street Bridge. The Ford Fusion slowed to a stop behind severai cars at a red tight and turned left onto River Avenue. Uber is testing its ?eet of seif?driving cars on the streets, bridges and hiils of Pittsburgh, the ride-sharing company con?rmed Wednesday. The San Francisco-based ?rm has said little about its progress in developing autonomous vehicles since it opened the Advanced Technoiogy Center 15 months ago in Pittsburgh?s Strip District. John Bares, head of Uber's Pittsburgh tab, took a Tribune-Review reporter on a ride in a Fusion hybrid that drove itself for portions of the trip. it was the ?rst time Uber allowed a member of the media to ride in a test car in self? driving mode, he said. ?This is super early what's the word? nascent technology," Bares said. "in general, this whole set of sensors is trying to do better than a human.? Uber cars have been spotted on Pittsburgh roads for about a year, mapping the city. Seif?driving car test runs started a few weeks ago. There have not been any crashes involving the cars. Uber's Fusions are out?tted with cameras, lasers and sensors to help them navigate the city?s sometimes tricky streets. The car used Wednesday had 22 coffee cup-sized camera lenses, a whirling laser on the roof and laser sensors at the corners. its cameras, sensors and laser can see more than 100 meters in all directions. Devoted to robotics The car is the latest robot in Bares?s 35 years of work. A drive to use robots to perform tasks too dangerous for humans led him to the cavernous former Fudgie Wudgie factory that Uber made its epicenter for self-driving car development. Bares, 53, came to Pittsburgh in 1981 to study at Carnegie Mellon University, where he earned bachelor?s and master?s degrees in civil engineering and a doctorate in philosophy. He worked on a robot in 1982 and 1983 that went into Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station a couple years after its partial meltdown to take photos. ?That was sort of the beginning of the bug in me, that I ioved robotics and sending robots to do things that were dangerous and unsafe for humans,? Bares said. He headed National Robotics Engineering Center for 13 years and in 2010 left to start Carnegie Robotics. The company worked on using robots to detect land mines and improvised explosive devices in war zones. About a year and a half ago, Bares met Travis Kaianick, Uber?s CEO. Kalanick told Bares that he wanted to develop self~driving cars in Pittsburgh. He asked Bares to join the effort. Bares agreed. About 33,000 people a year die in the United States in auto crashes. About 94 percent of those crashes are the result of human error, Bares said. "Can we make our roads safer? Can we let people be productive in their be safer while they do it?" Bares asked. ?That?s the thing that tugs me, and I think we can do that over time.? Challenging terrain Bares said Pittsburgh?s narrow and hilly streets, haphazard parking, rainy and snowy weather and aging infrastructure have made the city a challenging place to test self- driving technology. "We have the world?s best test site right at our doorstep," Bares said. ?it's not quite Everest, but it?s a hard beautiful thing is we do have that mountain right out of our front door to climb.? The car will accelerate, brake, steer and perform other basic functions on its own. It switches out of self?driving mode with a loud beep if its sensors detect a car swerving into its lane or it encounters something it does not recognize or know how to negotiate. The driver can take control of the car at any time. "We?re looking for instances to make it dif?cult for the computer to drive,? Bares said. ?We ?nd those and we work on them.? The car?s sensors have detected parked cars sticking out into traf?c, people jaywalking, bicyciists and a goose crossing River Avenue. The car also can detect potholes. ?The hard thing with a pothole is you don?t always want to do what a human does," Bares said, joking that the car might eventually be programmed to identify a pothole and contact the city about its location. "Many times, what a human does is dart into the oncoming lane, and that?s a risky move.? Crowded ?eld Uber joins Google, Carnegie Mellon and other universities, efforts by auto manufacturers and a gaggle of smaller start-ups in the quest to move self-driving cars onto city streets. Ford, Google, Lyft, Uber and Volvo?s car division formed the Self- Driving Coalition for Safer Streets in April to push for the technology. The National Highway Traf?c Safety Administration has said it could have self-driving car guidelines ready by July. California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, North Dakota, Michigan, Tennessee, Florida and Washington, D.C., have enacted autonomous vehicle legislation. lawmakers and state Department of Transportation of?cials are working on similar laws. The state has a provision that says someone capable of driving must be behind the wheel when the car is driving. "Our ?rst and foremost is safety," said Kurt Myers, PennDOT?s deputy secretary of driver and vehicie services. "But we want to do everything that we can to encourage the testing of this technology.? Under California law, Google and other companies must report to the state, which publishes publicly all crashes invoiving self-driving cars. That state?s website list 14 incidents since December 2014: twelve involved a Google car. Google started testing a self-driving Toyota Prius on California freeways in 2009. its cars have self?driven more than 1.6 million miles on the streets of Mountain View, Calif, Austin, Kirkland, Wash, and the Phoenix metro area. Carnegie Meilon University, which lost 40 researchers to Uber shortly after its Advanced Technology Center opened, debuted self-driving technology in Western in 2013 when a modi?ed 2011 Cadiliac SRX drove poiiticians and transportation of?cials from Cranberry to Pittsburgh International Airport. Early tests in the California desert started 10 to 15 years ago. In 2014 and 2015, the CMU team took the self?driving Cadillac to Washington for runs around the Capitol Hill and the Pentagon. ?That was challenging because you have to drive so much more aggressively,? said Stan Caldwell, executive director of Carnegie Meilon?s Traf?c21 Institute and an adjunct associate professor of transportation and public policy. "To really advance this technology to where it needs to be, to where it is operated safely, you need to have it in these conditions." On the way back to the Strip District. the Uber car set at a red light at Penn Avenue. Other cars are easy to predict but people are not, Bares said as cyclists and pedestrians passed. ?We?ve got a long way to go until we can ?gure out people," Bares said. As he ?nished talking and the car, back under Uber employee Priest's controt, waited to turn left onto Penn Avenue, a pedestrian jaywalked. Mathew Priest, the Uber employee in the driver's seat who was no more than a passenger at this point, took his hands off the wheel and foot off the pedal as the car drove itself east on the 3?lst Street Bridge. The Ford Fusion slowed to a stop behind several cars at a red tight and turned left onto River Avenue. Uber is testing its ?eet of self-driving cars on the streets, bridges and hills of Pittsburgh, the ride?sharing company con?rmed Wednesday. The San Francisco?based ?rm has said little about its progress in developing autonomous vehictes since it opened the Advanced Technology Center 15 months ago in Pittsburgh?s Strip District. John Bares, head of Uber's Pittsburgh lab, took a Tribune-Review reporter on a ride in a Fusion hybrid that drove itsehc for portions of the trip. It was the ?rst time Uber allowed a member of the media to ride in a test car in self- driving mode, he said. ?This is super early what's the word? nascent technology.? Bares said. "In generat, this whole set of sensors is trying to do better than a human.? Uber cars have been Spotted on Pittsburgh roads for about a year, mapping the city. Self-driving car test runs started a few weeks ago. There have not been any crashes involving the cars. Uber's Fusions are out?tted with cameras. tasers and sensors to help them navigate the city's sometimes tricky streets. The car used Wednesday had 22 coffee cup-sized camera lenses, a whirling laser on the roof and laser sensors at the corners. cameras, sensors and iaser can see more than 100 meters in all directions. Devoted to robotics The car is the latest robot in Bares?s 35 years of work. A drive to use robots to perform tasks too dangerous for humans led him to the cavernous former Fudgie Wudgie factory that Uber made its epicenter for self-driving car deveiopment. Bares, 53, came to Pittsburgh in 1981 to study at Carnegie Mellon University, where he earned bachelor?s and master's degrees in civil engineering and a doctorate in philosophy. He worked on a robot in 1982 and 1983 that went into Three Mile Island Nuciear Generating Station a couple years after its partial meltdown to take photos. ?That was sort of the beginning of the bug in me, that I loved robotics and sending robots to do things that were dangerous and unsafe for humans." Bares said. He headed National Robotics Engineering Center for 13 years and in 2010 left to start Carnegie Robotics. The company worked on using robots to detect land mines and improvised explosive devices in war zones. About a year and a half ago, Bares met Travis Kalanick, Uber?s CEO. Kalanick told Bares that he wanted to develop self-driving cars in Pittsburgh. He asked Bares to join the effort. Bares agreed. About 33,000 people a year die in the United States in auto crashes. About 94 percent of those crashes are the resuit of human error, Bares said. "Can we make our roads safer? Can we let people be productive in their be safer while they do it?" Bares asked. ?That?s the thing that tugs me, and i think we can do that over time." Challenging terrain Bares said Pittsburgh?s narrow and hiliy streets, haphazard parking, rainy and snowy weather and aging infrastructure have made the city a challenging place to test self- driving technology. ?We have the world?s best test site right at our doorstep,? Bares said. ?It's not quite Everest, but it's a hard beautiful thing is we do have that mountain right out of our front door to climb.? The car will accelerate, brake, steer and perform other basic functions on its own. it switches out of self-driving mode with a ioud beep if its sensors detect a car swerving into its lane or it encounters something it does not recognize or know how to negotiate. The driver can take control of the car at any time. ?We?re looking for instances to make it dif?cult for the computer to drive,? Bares said. "We ?nd those and we work on them.? The car's sensors have detected parked cars sticking out into traf?c, people jaywalking, bicyclists and a goose crossing River Avenue. The car aiso can detect potholes. "The hard thing with a pothole is you don?t always want to do what a human does,? Bares said, joking that the car might eventually be programmed to identify a pothole and contact the city about its location. "Many times, what a human does is dart into the oncoming lane, and that?s a risky move.? Crowded ?eld Uber joins Google, Carnegie Mellon and other universities. efforts by auto manufacturers and a gaggle of smaller start-ups in the quest to move self-driving cars onto city streets. Ford, Google, Lyft, Uber and Volvo's car division formed the Self-Driving Coalition for Safer Streets in April to push for the technology. The National Highway Traf?c Safety Administration has said it could have self?driving car guidelines ready by July. California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, North Dakota, Michigan, Tennessee, Florida and Washington, DC, have enacted autonomous vehicle legislation. lawmakers and state Department of Transportation of?cials are working on similar laws. The state has a provision that says someone capable of driving must be behind the wheel when the car is driving. "Our ?rst and foremost responsibility is safety,? said Kurt Myers, PennDOT?s deputy secretary of driver and vehicle services. "But we want to do everything that we can to encourage the testing of this technology.? Under California law, Google and other companies must report to the state, which publishes publicly all crashes involving self-driving cars. That state?s website list 14 incidents since December 2014: twelve involved a Google car. Google started testing a self?driving Toyota Prius on California freeways in 2009. Its cars have self?driven more than 1.6 million miles on the streets of Mountain View, Calif, Austin, Kirkland, Wash, and the Phoenix metro area. Carnegie Mellon University, which lost 40 researchers to Uber shortly after its Advanced Technology Center opened, debuted self-driving technology in Western in 2013 when a modi?ed 2011 Cadillac SRX drove politicians and transportation of?cials from Cranberry to Pittsburgh International Airport. Early tests in the California desert started 10 to 15 years ago. in 2014 and 2015, the CMU team took the self-driving Cadillac to Washington for runs around the Capitol and the Pentagon. ?That was challenging because you have to drive so much more aggressively," said Stan Caldwell, executive director of Carnegie Mellon?s Traf?c21 Institute and an adjunct associate professor of transportation and public policy. ?To really advance this technology to where it needs to be, to where it is operated safely, you need to have it in these conditions.? On the way back to the Strip District, the Uber car set at a red light at Penn Avenue. Other cars are easy to predict but people are not, Bares said as cyclists and pedestrians passed. "We've got a long way to go until we can ?gure out people,? Bares said. As he ?nished talking and the car, back under Uber employee Priest?s control, waited to turn left onto Penn Avenue, a pedestrian jaywalked. Waymo is a self?driving technoiogy company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around. We're determined to improve transportation for people around the world, building on self-driving technology developed over eight years in Google's labs. What?s different now that you?ve become Waymo? We believe self?driving technology has enormous commercial potential and will enabie us to rethink somer?fiehe ten mites that motor vehicles travel around the world every year. As a standalone business, our goal is to commercialize this technology and build products that can help millions of people. As Waymo. one of our next steps wiil be to let peopie use fully self-driving cars to do everyday things like run errands or commute to work. Over the long term we believe self-driving cars will be useful in ways the world has yet to imagine. Waymo will explore many different opportunities for self-driving technology. What happened on the world's first fully ride? We completed the world's first fully self-driving trip on public roads on October 20, 2015. Our vehicle did not have a steering wheel. foot pedal or test driver on board as it drove from a doctor's office to a park and through typical Austin neighborhoods in everyday traffic no police escorts or closed course). While there have been many rides with self-driving cars before. including our own. this was the first time any car has completed a trip from start to finish on public roads without a test driver on board. Our software was fully responsible for all the driving. As a passenger, Steve Mahan became the first person in the world to ride in a fully self-driving car on public roads. For Steve, who is legally blind. this was the first time he was alone in a car in 12 years. How did you prepare for this drive? What work did you do to ensure this trip was safe? Our first priority is safety in deveioping technology. This ride was the culmination of six years of careful development and testing, which at the time included over a million miles of autonomous driving on public roads, three million miles a day of simulated driving, and testing our car's performance in thousands of unique or rare scenarios on our private test track. To prepare for fully seif-driving trips, we put multiple layers of safety preparations in place, including programming the vehicle to siow down and come to a safe stop in the event that it came across a situation it did not recognize. How does the technology work? At the most basic level, driving is about processing information around you and making decisions based on those signals. The same is true for our self-driving cars. Say Hello to Waymo Fast facts about our new company What is Waymo? Waymo is a self?driving technology company with a mission to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around. We?re determined to improve transportation for people around the world, building on self?driving technology developed over eight years in Google's labs. What?s different now that you've become Waymo? We believe self?driving technology has enormous commercial potential and will enable us to rethink some of the ten trillion miles that motor vehicles travel around the world every year. As a standalone business, our goal is to commercialize this technology and build products that can help millions of people. As Waymo, one of our next steps will be to let people use fully self-driving cars to do everyday things like run errands or commute to work. Over the long term we believe self?driving cars will be useful in ways the world has yet to imagine. Waymo will explore many different opportunities for self-driving technology. What happened on the world's first fully self-driven ride? We completed the world's first fully self-driving trip on public roads on October 20, 2015. Our vehicle did not have a steering wheel, foot pedal or test driver on board as it drove from a doctor?s office to a park and through typical Austin neighborhoods in everyday traffic no police escorts or closed course). While there have been many rides with self?driving cars before, including our own, this was the first time any car has completed a trip from start to finish on public roads without a test driver on board. Our software was fully responsible for all the driving. As a passenger, Steve Mahan became the first person in the world to ride in a fully self-driving car on public roads. For Steve, who is legally blind, this was the first time he was alone in a car in 12 years. How did you prepare for this drive? What work did you do to ensure this trip was safe? Our first priority is safety in developing self-driving technology. This ride was the culmination of six years of careful development and testing, which at the time included over a million miles of autonomous driving on public roads, three million miles a day of simulated driving, and testing our car's performance in thousands of unique or rare scenarios on our private test track. To prepare for fully self?driving trips, we put multiple layers of safety preparations in place, including programming the vehicle to slow down and come to a safe stop in the event that it came across a situation it did not recognize. How does the technology work? At the most basic level, driving is about processing information around you and making decisions based on those signals. The same is true for our self-driving cars. To determine its location, our car uses a combination of detailed, SD digital maps (including information like lane markers and its? a. if it? traffic signals), and an array of cameras, lasers and radars that can see 360 degrees (in contrast, the human field of vision is 120 degrees). day or night. I?d like to thank Governor Ducey, Vice Mayor Jack Sellers, and Dana Kennedy for being here with us today and for welcoming us into the community. . My name is Jennifer Haroon, and on behalf of our new company, Waymo, i want to tell you we?re so excited to be here today and grateful for the warm welcome we?ve received here in the Valley. - You?re probably wondering why we?re in this big open lot today. That?s because today, we?re giving the Governor the inaugural Valley ride in a Waymo self?driving car. Waymo . Your next question probably is, what exactly is Waymo? . Waymo is our new self-driving technology company. We got our start as research and development project at Google. As a company, our mission is to make it safe and easy for people and things to move around. . We?ve been developing self-driving technology since 2009, learning everything from basic highway driving to complex city street driving. . Now, after nearly eight years of building self-driving technology from scratch, we?re ready to turn the technology into a product that people can actually use in their daily lives. . We think self?driving technology has the potential to transform people?s lives and improve transportation for everyone. Safety and mobility - Today, there are too many lives unnecessarily lost on our roadways. In the US. alone, nearly 40,000 people die in traffic crashes every single year. And 94% of all crashes involve human error or inattention. We should not accept this as the cost of driving. - A self?driving car is always alert. It doesn?t get distracted by text messages. it doesn?t drink too much before driving home. And it doesn?t get tired after a long day at work. - Self?driving technology can also give people a way to regain their freedom and independence. There are about 20 to 30 million Americans who can?t drive because of their physical condition. That includes my friend, Steve Mahan, who started losing his vision more than 20 years ago. - Steve has been a friend of our project for a long time, and has taken several trips in our self-driving car over the years. But in October 2015, Steve became the ?rst person in the world to ride in a truly self-driving car on public roads from start to finish, no steering wheel, no pedals, no test driver. On this ride, Steve took a typical trip you or i may take on any given day: he traveled from a doctor's office to a park and through a typical neighborhood. - Though it may sound ordinary, this trip was anything but for Steve. it was the ?rst time he ridden alone in a car in over 12 years. Steve told us that this ride was an enormous con?rmation that one day he could have access to transportation when he wanted it, and how he wanted it. - That?s exactly why we're so dedicated to bringing truly self?driving into the world. Valley - That brings us to our work in Arizona. As one ofjust four states in the country where we?re testing our self-driving cars, Arizona is playing a crucial role in advancing this technology. - The community, and city and state leaders, have been welcoming and supportive. They?ve encouraged innovation, and they?ve been great partners in bringing this technology to beat . Since we ?rst announced that we would test our technology right here in Chandler, we?ve learned a tremendous amount. As we've driven through the streets, we?ve experienced everything from extreme heat, to watering trucks, to ?ve-stack traf?c lights and our ?rst haboobs. . We?ve also continued to invest in the community. Last October, we announced that we were moving into our ?rst self-driving testing facility in Arizona. And we continue to ?nd great locals to join us as test drivers, helping us refine our technology. - it?s already been an incredibiejourney here - initially as the Google self-driving car project, and we're excited to continue down our path of making this technology a reality in Arizona as Waymo.
