Dear SigEp NH-A Alumni, We believe that our Chapter remains a fraternity built on a strong brotherhood with members who are leaders across campus and bound for success after graduation. Please find below short descriptions of recent accomplishments by brothers since 2014. The list is not by any stretch exhaustive, but rather was compiled to illustrate the diversity and depth of involvements of the recent SigEp brotherhood. COLLEGE INVOLVEMENT College Leadership Our Chapter’s brothers continue to excel as members and leaders of a wide breadth of campus activities, including sports teams, academic groups, and other campus organizations. It would be impractical to list out all the activities our brothers lead and participate in, so we have selected a few below: Within Greek life itself, SigEp had demonstrated its leadership since 2014 with several officers in the Greek Leadership Council (including 3 GLC Chairs) as well as the InterFraternity Council. With respect to Greek awards, in 2015 alone, for example, the Chapter received the O’Connor Award (awarded to the “best” fraternity of the year) for the fourth year in a row, the Service Award, and the Leadership Program Award. The same year, the Greek Community gave two “All Star” awards to two brothers as well as “Greek Man of the Year” to the Chapter’s president (note “Greek Man of the Year” was awarded last year to a SigEp as well). While we are confident that we have continued to lead as a fraternity at Dartmouth, the awards we received for Greek programs have been discontinued recently and replaced by new categories of awards (for example, we received the new Scholarship Award last year). Outside of Greek life, we have had several brothers lead a variety of activities with the Dartmouth Outing Club. For example, in the past couple years alone, one brother was the First Year Trips Director and several were on the First Year Trips directorate. Others have led groups such as The Dartmouth (which a SigEp ran as Editor-in-Chief last year), STAR peer mentoring, and the bonfire committee. We have had two chairs of the Undergraduate Finance Committee, in charge of allocating over $1,000,000 to various campus organization, in the past few years. Brothers continue their involvement in a variety of intramural, club, and varsity sports as well as arts programs on campus. For example, we have members of the varsity rowing, squash, and swimming teams, as well as continued deep involvement in Ultimate Frisbee (in which SigEps have helped captain/lead for the past several years). In performing arts, SigEp has had and currently has representatives in almost every Hop ensemble (Wind Ensemble, DSO, Glee Club, Handel Society, Barbary Coast, etc.) and a variety of a cappella groups (Aires, Dodecs, Sing Dynasty). SigEps consistently take on leadership positions in these groups as musical directors and business managers and are consistently selected as leads in the College’s own productions. For example, a SigEp ’20 recently played the lead male in the fall musical, Cabaret. For our leadership on campus, our brothers have won countless awards and gained recognition by peers. Awards and recognition for leadership given to brothers in the past few years include, but are not limited to, the Dean’s Plate Award, President’s Leadership Award, and Dean’s Office Emerging Leaders Award. Many brothers have been selected as Rockefeller Leadership Fellows. In terms of other forms of recognition, for example, brothers consistently have been nominated to be Class Marshals or similar positions (e.g. Historian, Orator) for their graduating class. Academics The Chapter continues to demonstrate a commitment to learning at Dartmouth. The average GPA of the Chapter from Fall 2011 through Summer 2017 was 3.60, the highest of any fraternity (and second of all Greek organizations). This compares to a male affiliated average GPA of 3.43 and overall undergraduate GPA of 3.48 for the same period. Our Chapter has also continued to focus on advancing academically, with our Chapter GPA increasing 3 of the last 5 years (with a total increase of 0.04 during the period) and growing faster than the undergraduate average (trend data compares the school years of 11F-12X to 16F-17X. Source: College Pulse). As such, the house has had dozens of brothers graduate with latin honors (i.e. Cum Laude through Summa Cum Laude) and several brothers obtain prestigious postgraduate scholarships. For example, we have had 2 Rhodes Scholars, 1 Schwartzman Scholar, 1 Fulbright Scholar, and 1 Yenching Scholar in the past 4 graduating SigEp NH-A classes alone. MAINTAINING A STRONG BROTHERHOOD Programming Our brotherhood continues planning a variety of both internal and public programming events through the year. A handful of examples from the past few years include apple picking with a sorority, “Pizza & Profs,” Sigma Phi Chefsilon (and related cooking and grilling events), visiting breweries and the Cabot cheese factory, laser tag, paintball outings, weekly lunches off campus (e.g. The Orient), and sports game watch parties. Brothers also supplement these executive-led events with their own “Phi Events,” where they are required to organize and execute their own group activity (e.g. cheese tasting, camping / dinner at the Lodge, movie and subsequent interpretation, dance classes, and a juggling workshop taught by a brother who had been on David Letterman for his juggling abilities). We also continue to plan and execute very large and intricate events, including Pop Punk, SPEakeasy, and our termly formal. Lastly, every term, we continue to have programming focused specifically on self-reflection, including brotherhood discussions and Pass the Sword / Hoops of Steel. Service and Community Engagement The brotherhood continues to be actively involved in community engagement and service. Brothers have spent thousands of hours and raised thousands of dollars the past few years on service projects ranging from providing tutoring and/or financial advice to low-income community members, mentoring students, cooking for the homeless, and more. We regularly sponsor charity events around campus such as the Rose Benefit, Relay for Life, and Feeding the Hungry at the Haven and field teams of volunteers for events such as the Prouty, Special Olympics, and Memorial Challenge. We recently created Sigma Pie Epsilon, where members of the community pie SigEps in the face, for charity – the event was a huge success. Lastly, our brothers continue to lead these efforts across campus as well; brothers are leaders of organizations such as DREAM as well as organize events for awareness of key issues. For example, this week, a brother planned a men’s roundtable event for sexual assault awareness week; out of the ~25 attendees, almost half were SigEp. Financial Aid The Chapter’s financial aid program has been a paradigm for other fraternities at Dartmouth. Frequently, other fraternity presidents on campus ask our executive committee how to implement similar programs to dramatically reduce the chance that finances would be a reason a brother could not participate in Chapter activities. We are confident we have the most robust and fair financial aid program, meeting an internally estimated 85-90% of need during a given quarter by recently providing over $10,000 in aid in a given term (not including summer). This aid is entirely grant based and has no contingencies; for example, other houses require additional duties or cleans around the house for aid. We are extremely proud of our financial aid program and look forward to meeting 100% of requested financial aid support in the terms moving forward. POST-GRADUATION Following graduation, a significant portion of our brothers have started working at some of the most prestigious firms in the world. These include, but are not limited to McKinsey, Bain and Co., Goldman Sachs, Amazon, Microsoft, and the Federal Reserve. Others have joined extremely reputable and selective “start-ups” including Affirm, Wealthfront, and Uber. While many of our brothers go into corporate life, others have continued with their studies in the world’s top medical, law, business, and other graduate schools, including at Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge. One recent SigEp alumnus is serving the United States military as an officer. We expect this trend to continue given the ‘18s and ‘19s have already accepted full-time and internship opportunities (respectively) at similar firms (e.g. Goldman Sachs, Oliver Wyman, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Wayfair, Microsoft, Amazon, Citi, etc.) or are perusing their education further (e.g. medical school, a BE at Thayer). Sincerely, Eli Derrow, ’15 SigEp President Joseph Clyne, ’16 SigEp President Ellis Guo, ’17 SigEp President David Herrera, ’18 SigEp President
