Dear 5rng Alumnus, by now you may have heard rumors ofmzjor changes at NHrAlpha. We wrrte today because we belreve the current Avc board as well as the Natronal 5rng organrzatron's recent actrons threaten the lrvelrhood of the Dartmouth 5rng chapterthat has helped shaped each and every one ofour Dartmouth experrences. As a brref background, the Natronal organrzatron has decrded to place our house under cease and desrst and soon conduct a revrew. Natronal rntervrew every memberofthe house and, rf hrstory of other 5rng chapters rs an out a substantral portron ofthe house (we understand these reviews to remove 50.90% of the current undergraduate brothers). Whrle those alumnr who have graduated recently know, there has been a strong drsconnect between our chapter and the chapters Avc Natronal organrzatron. forthose less famrlrar, the below drscusses what the revrew means, potentral rmpact on the house, and how as an alumnus you can help. In short, we ask you to email Avc President JD aptekar -- to ask him to cease any aspect of the membership review. We also askto let us know (one way or the other) whether you would support once agarn becomrng a local chapter, Natronal Slng, grven the past years and drscontent. Summary We had frve undergraduates attend Natronal's Carlson Wrnter at the Natronal Board of urrectors called a meetrng our chapter. ln the meetrng, the board expressed concern about our chapter's future to rmplement the recently passed substancerree legrslatron, and asked us to put together a draft ofan rmplementatron plan so we could then work Natronal headquarters staffto refrne and rmplement plan. However, when we our draft, ratherthan work together to rmprove our organrzatron gorng forward, the Natronal Board of urrectors announced that rt had already voted to place us on cease and desrst and conduct a full revrew. to Natronal, rt decrded to conduct revrew because our chapter has had "twelve management over the past four years. For example, the latest management that occurred at the chapter was a wntecup from College Safety and 5ecurrty for an unregrstered party; the wrllerup resulted from Safety and Secumy a crowd of football players and frrends a Webster Avenue "clrcun" [when a group of each Dartmouth Greek house unannounced on a grven We determrned that the rnfractron resulted from lack of management and rt resulted a of our management protocol that vested more other executrves and the brotherhood at large. However, whrle that number of twelve may seem hrgh, many were taken out of context or out ofour control. For example, a guest of the house on a table the basement, wrthout our and agarnst who subsequently fell, rs consrdered a serrous "rrsk management We take forthese and we are takrng steps to remedy any rssues as we belreve thatthe our house. We would be happyto send across rnformatron on each ofthe from the presrdents who dealt them upon request. Additionally, for context, senior Dartmouth orhcials made it clear that most, it not all, fraternities on campus have a similar number or mcidents. We have been told by Dartmouth orhcialsthat 5.ng NHVA IS still the best chapter on campus, in terms of academics and campus leadership. We still have the highest cumulative GPA on campus, hold leadership positions in First social service organizations, and a cappella groups, all while continuing to enjoy programming, social, and brotherhood events at Slng. We recognize that our chapter is not perfect and would like the opportunity to work with the Dartmouth Greek Life othce and the National headquarters improve our risk management practices--yet we feel that conductmg a membership review will not help us improve, but will rather decimate the house and dismantle the chapter we have all enjoyed participating in. What does the membership review entai All of the brothers must fill out a detailed questionnaire and provide mtormation on hnances, academic performance, and disciplinary record. After out the questionnaire, each brother will have an houre long interview with a Membership Review aoard, which mcludes from other colleges and universities, and Sean Anthony '06, a Dartmouth sing alumnus. Afterthe interview, the reviewers can elect to invite the brother back mto the chapter or decide to expel the brother from the house. While 5.ng National claims that this will be an unbiased process durmg which each brother has an equal shot at remaining in the house, we do not foresee this as possible. For example, as 5ean IS a current member ofthe Avc and an outspoken National supporter, his presence means that brothers may not have a fair review. What can you do to help? when we heard this news, we were saddened and outraged. We tried to express our opmionsto the National organization and Avc time and time again, but to no avail. In theory, the AW: is supposed to represent the entire alumni corporation, but we do not believe this to be the case in reality. ifyou are equally dissatished or sympathetic to this cause, it would helptremendously <Peter Hasenkamp at Mlguex Velazquez at Michad Klmmell at Chapman at-- Hammett-n-- sean Anthony-n-- Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you at the Chapter house next urne you're Hanover.
