the radiation has been emit-
ted. But long?lasting atoms
remain, particularly) strontlv
um- 90 and cesium- 137, with?
an average lifetime of 40
years.

Though relatively feeble,
this radiation could amount
to a damaging cumulative
dose over the years if you
lived closely with it in areas
which had been heavily dust?
ed?with fallout. You must get
rid of it, from rooftops, from
window ledges, from tree
leaves, from grass, pave-
ments, buildings, wherever it
has collected.

house, or any building, or
trees, with?a hose. Even if
your water supply has been
contaminated with enough
fallout to be unsuitable for
drinking, it can still be used
or this washing job.

GRASS closely
and carefully, and removing
the cuttings to a safe dis-
tance can help clear up
lawns. But you may have to
scrape away the top quarter-
inch or so of lawns and soil,
and put that dirt carefully to
one side. .

Areas within 200 yards of
homes should be cleaned of
lingering fallout.

broken window, it must be

swept out, or vacuumed up, i

that has been dusted need
thorough cleaning, prefera-
bly by water which empties
into sewers or drains.

In doing all this, you need
a geiger counter to tell it
your grounds or streets have
residual amount of residual
fallouti? The geiger counter
clicks as it measures the
fallout. 

FOOD IS SAFE to eat if it
has been canned, packaged
or wrapped. Radiation going
through it doesn?t harm it,
or make it radioactive. Veg-
etables can be washed care-
fully, or outer exposed por-
tiOns thrown away. Food
stocks in grocery stores and
warehouses, or Special stor-
age areas, should be safe.

Water from contaminated
reservoirs can be purified by
normal filtering, but proba?
bly will need repeated puri-
?fications and careul testing
to be certain that fallout par-
ticles are removed. In an
emergency, you can evapo-
rate or distill that water?
pure water will be collected,
with fallout particles remain?
