Job Description EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MCDONOGH 35 HIGH SCHOOL School District Information The vision of the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) is that every student receives a high-quality education that fosters his or her individual capabilities, while ensuring that they thrive and are prepared for civic, social, and economic success. Effective July 1, 2018, all New Orleans Public Schools will transition into one unified system of autonomous schools under the oversight of the OPSB. The History of McDonogh 35 High School This mission of McDonogh 35 High School is to encourage academic excellence for all students in challenging and interactive programs that are supported by teachers, staff, students, parents, and the community. Prior to 1917, during the era of segregated school systems in the Southern US, no public high school existed in New Orleans for African-American students. In 1917 a group of citizens met to petition the Orleans Parish School System to convert McDonogh 13 Boys' School from a white elementary school to a secondary educational facility for black students. The petition was granted and in the fall of 1917, McDonogh 35 became recognized as a four-year high school. Today, the school with a hundred year history is located at 4000 Cadillac Street in New Orleans in a state of the art learning facility. Position Summary Reporting to the OPSB Superintendent of Schools, the Executive Director of McDonogh 35 High School will serve as the Head of School and will oversee a broad range of functions, including curriculum development and innovations, enrollment management, fundraising, financial oversight, meeting facilitation and community building, while at all times promoting a dynamic, inclusive School culture, and upholding standards of excellence. This position will champion the School’s mission and lead the deployment of the School’s strategic plan in furtherance of that purpose. The ideal candidate will inspire and maintain high standards of teaching, learning, and involvement, and will foster an atmosphere where students, teachers, staff, and other members of the McDonogh 35 community, feel a sense of belonging and engagement. The Executive Director will be an outstanding individual with a proven track record of accomplishments in education. This is a temporary appointment that is expected to last from May 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Visionary Leadership: The Executive Director will engage and collaborate with various stakeholders including teachers, parents, students, and alumni association to formulate a vision for exemplary student achievement, rigorous instructional strategies, and college or career readiness.  Ensures adherence to all provisions of law and all OPSB policies relating to the management of the school and other educational, social, and recreational activities, under the general direction of the Superintendent of Schools. 2  Formulates strategies that achieve excellence in planning instruction and delivery, facilities and the learning environment, and in overall business operations. Executive Leadership: The Executive Director will lead a continuous cycle of planning based on data, implementing plans through effective communication and visionary leadership, providing oversight to ensure actions are achieving the desired results.    Identifies and cultivates potential and emerging leaders, promotes teacher leadership functions focused on instructional proficiency and student learning, and aligns leadership development practices with system objectives, improvement planning, leadership proficiency needs, and appropriate instructional goals. Maximizes the impact of school personnel, fiscal and facility resources to provide recurring systemic support for instructional priorities and a supportive learning environment. Develops a systematic performance evaluation of academy grade leaders implementing practices to appropriately recognize and reward excellence and effectively address poor performance ensuring that academy grade leaders receive additional support in critical areas. Instructional Leadership: The Executive Director will use knowledge of teaching and learning to implement effective and innovative teaching practices which engage students in meaningful and challenging learning experiences.    Implements the educator effectiveness model TAP™ to provide learning opportunities for career advancement, professional growth, instructionally focused accountability and competitive compensation for instructional staff. Understands and interprets student performance data to identify areas for development, and shares and supports implementation of best practices with the academy grade leaders and instructional staff. Articulates plans for daily operations and implementation of student services, including support services, discipline and management, and crisis intervention. School-Community Relations: The Executive Director understands the culture of the school community and create a sustainable school-community relations vision.   Understands the importance of institutionalizing the rich McDonogh 35 vision and creating buy-in and support for the school’s mission and values. Maintains high visibility at school and in the community, regularly engages stakeholders in the work of the school and utilizes appropriate technologies for communication and collaboration. Educational Background Master’s Degree required. Minimum of three - five years successful experience in education administration at the level of principal or above. Preferred Skills and Management Experience     Experienced instructional leader with deep knowledge of literacy and numeracy. Proven track record leading large-scale, sustainable turnaround efforts, as well as transforming good schools into great ones. Expertise in leadership development, building effective teams, coaching, and ensuring professional growth for instructional and support staff. Pursues and implements innovative ideas and methods, remains committed to seeking out and sharing current research and evidence-based best practices. Reporting Structure: The Executive Director of McDonogh 35 High School will report to the OPSB Superintendent of Schools. Direct Reports: The Executive Director serves as the head of school and the lead administrator for the building and oversees the complete academic program and entire McDonogh 35 staff. FSLA Information: This is a full-time, exempt school-based position. Salary: OPSB Salary Schedule E-10.
