cwmr: Cuba 7 . ms ocn(s) see/04613.71 SUBJECT: Countethevolutionary Organization, 19 February 1971 Alpha 55, and its Activities A reliable source of the Hiaoi Field Offik furnished the following information. 2. Alpha 65 was founded in late 1962 or early 1?53 by Eloy Gutierrez 7 Henoyo, Armando Pieites, An tonic Veeinna, Andres Sar-ario Sargent, Dr. Diego Hedina and lothers, .as a cover for the .Second National i?ront of Escambray. 3. In 1955 it separated from the Second National Front of Escaobray. 0n 5 Jan .71 Andres Nazario Sargent became the ?Styrene Leader" of Alpha 66. They are alleged to have 300 active members and inactive members. Up to 5 Jan 71 there were no ex~menbers of Brigade 2505 registered as active or' inactive members. There are professionals, former wealthy men and farmers who are active members. 4. Raids against Cuba commenced in 1963, the last raid was in October 1970 in Bones, Oriente Province, where. 15 men allegedly landed. [0/5 Comment: Sources, arriVing -on the air] i-ft, ha\'e reported t.a1t of these 15 men five ?were killed and two taken prisoners at ?nite. itei also said rumors were that the remaining eight were either killed or taken prisoners.l There have been three landings, one in 1967 and two in 1970, also 14 raids Eran 1963 to October 1970. They have also attacked-one ship on the high seas and two ships while in Cuban harbors. During the attack on the high seas ll fishermen were taken prisoners and brought to the US. They were later returned to Cuba. These landings, raids and attacks on ships have been nailegedly conducted to awaken the dormant status of- counter?revolutionary activities and to create 'a state of revolutionary conscience within the Cubans who still- terrain in Cuba. 5. Some peeple consider Alpha 56 to be a coaster-urevoluLionary organization with a leftist tendency. There are rumors that it has a clandestine group, with- in Cuba, who gathers i.nteliigence information Ear it. However, to my knowledge . these rumors have not been cenfirmed. . . 6. In mid?1970 the Hiam.i FBI raided the Alpha 55 office, and took part of their files with them. npparont.Ly Alpha 55 had 5.:glicates hidden because today duplicates of the files which the ?81 removed are in tneir filing cabinets. . 7. On occasions some of their leaders have been arrested, or interrogated, but have been set free soon thereafter. At the present time Alpha 55 does not have the full cooperation-nor_bncking of the majority of the Cuban exiles. In . fact it is very limited.' To my knowledge there is no prominent exile connected . with Alpha 55; the reason being that they are under the impression the organ~ ization, as a whole, has leftist tendencies. 8. As far as I know there is no established relationship between Alpha 55 ..nd the ?Truth about Cuba Committee", nor do i haxe any knowledge that it is organizing any type of "Cuban Katie". - end -4 -.
