That the GN Department of Family Services establish, with the GN Department of Health and other relevant agencies, protocols to ensure effective communication sharing regarding children ?ve and under where the families may require additional support from the Department of Family Services. 2. That the GN Department of Family Services develop regular training, programming and supports to encourage and foster a preventative culture in child protection work. 3. That the ON Department of Family Services ensures that training provided is consistent among all Child Care employees as well as properly document and track employees progress. 4. That the GN Department of Family Services establish an ongoing method to monitor all community social services worker caseloads keeping in mind the best practices associated with social work within Nunavut communities and across Canada. That the GN Department of Family Services, in consideration of caseloads for regularly review the needs for increased staff within the GN budgetary process. 6. That the GN Department of Family Services explore the viability of community based resource homes or other culturally appropriate alternatives for parents and children to attend as a place of supportive learning or as an alternative to apprehension of children. 7- That the GN Department of Family Services ensure that all child and family services staff, foster parents and care providers, are trained and informed about SIDS risk factors and safe sleeping best practices and further that there be a mechanism to demonstrate knowledge of these risk factors and best practices. 8. That the GN Department of Family Services give consideration to establishing other minimum training standards for Foster Parents, Care Givers and such as First Aid, CPR and Non-Violent Crisis intervention. 9. That the GN Department of Education ensure that all licensed day cares and other child care facilities within their jurisdiction are provided with information of risk factors for SIDS and best practices in sleep safety and employ these practices. It). That the ON Department of Family Services develop a critical incident protocol, which protocol will include a critical incident response team, designed to provide appropriate support to Family Services? staff and service providers involved in the critical incident. All efforts should be taken to use critical incidents as a teaching tool to learn from and prevent future critical incidents. That the GN and all agencies that may be involved in critical incidents give consideration to developing a critical incident protocol which will include a critical resPonse team, designed to provide appropriate support to all those involved in the critical incident. 12. That the GN Department of Family Services develop and implement a foster parent orientation program in accordance with best practices and consider the need for similar training for day home providers. 13. That the GN Department of Family Services explore the possibility of a licensed. onsite day care for children in care. 14. That the GN Departments of Health and Family Services work together on the development of guidelines and information on the impact of cannabis use on and around children. {7 W) Page20f3 VERDICT 0F JURY 15. That the ON Department of Health review current efforts to provide education on the dangers of second hand smoke, and consider changes in light of the upcoming legalization of marijuana. 16. That the GN Department of Health study the issue of the increased prevalence of SIDS in Nunavut, by tracking numbers and identifying Nunavut speci?c risk factors, with a view to reducing the incidence of SIDS in Nunavut. 17. That the GN Department of Health review mental health support systems to ensure that families who suffer trauma are made aware of all available help, and are provided with adequate assistance in coordination with Family Services. 18. That the GN Department of Family Services consider ways to rebuild trust with clients or client groups who have been through negative experiences or suffered trauma in association with Family Services activities. 19. That the GN Department of Family Services enter in to discussions with the Department of Health and other relevant agencies to explore mechanisms, within con?dentiality requirements, to identify expectant families that are of high risk. 20. That the GM Department of Family Services enhance efforts to recruit and train Inuktitut speaking social workers, and ensure adequate availability of interpreters. 21. That the GN and Government of Canada commit to discussing mechanisms to implement key recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission including those related to Child Welfare, Health as well as Professional Development and Training for public servants. 22. In the review and development of programs related to family and child welfare, that the GN Department of Family Services give full consideration to Inuit Qauj amatuqangit and involve Inuit organizations as appropriate. {git/9 Page3of3 #9
