Brian Hoyt Sr. Director, Corporate Communications TripAdvisor May 15, 2018 Thanks for your inquiry about the Grand Bahia Principe in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. TripAdvisor is dedicated to and focused on helping consumers understand when there might be an issue related to health, safety or discrimination matters during their travels. Our community's ability to write and publish reviews and forum posts - which are easily searchable onsite and through search engine queries - about their experience remain one of the best ways to alert other consumers about potential risks. While an unfortunate occurrence, there are thousands of reviews posted today on TripAdvisor about travelers being assaulted, experiencing safety issues or encountering discrimination. The examples you shared posted on TripAdvisor on the listing for the Grand Bahia Principe, for example, have dozens of helpful votes from other travelers who appreciated the account. Our health, safety and discrimination notifications are another layer of providing users additional information about a property when reviews about these important matters might not be readily available on a TripAdvisor business listing. In these instances, when a recent health, safety or discrimination issue comes to our attention via multiple, reputable media sources like the CBC, we consider posting a notification to the business that encourages users to do additional research. The hope and the intention is that consumers will do a simple Internet search on the property that will help provide more timely information that might not be on our website. The notification, once applied by a cross functional committee at TripAdvisor, can be active for up to a period of three months, or longer if media coverage about the issue or issues persist (and there remains a lack of reviews about these issues on our site). In this case, since there are a number of reviews posted to TripAdvisor already (and those reviews have received a number of helpful votes from other users, we would not apply a notification to the Grand Bahia Principe. Since we initiated this system towards the end of 2017, we have applied notifications to properties in South America, Mexico and Canada. ------------------------------------------------------
