- Official Statement In February, OU Medicine, Inc. concluded a previously announced transaction with HCA Healthcare that transferred ownership and management of OU Medical System hospital facilities from HCA to OU Medicine, Inc. This makes OU Medicine an Oklahoma-based nonprofit organization. Funded by the competitive issuance of long-term bonds and reinvestment of hospital revenues, OU Medicine is focused on taking care of Oklahomans. In a state with a population of 3.9 million people, we are the only level one trauma center for adults and children which means that we take care of patients in need of the most complex medical attention from across the state and region. In addition, the Stephenson Cancer Center is a National Cancer Institute (NCI)Designated Cancer Center. This places our comprehensive cancer care, which offers the most advanced cancer therapies available, in the top 2 percent nationally. In 2017, we ranked No. 1 in the nation for clinical trial enrollment for NCI-sponsored treatment trials. The inpatient bed tower is a vital part of OU Medicine’s essential services for Oklahomans. It will not only offer additional access to patients needing complex care for needs such as trauma, cancer care and beyond, but also complements our expanding and coordinated access to outpatient services. The creation of OU Medicine, Inc. fulfilled a longtime goal to further advance the state’s premier academic health system, elevating patient care, clinical research and the education of health professionals for the benefit of all Oklahomans. ### Official Statement of Jim Watson, chief financial officer of OU Medicine, Inc.: Because of the purchase and financing transactions by OU Medicine, Inc., a larger percentage of hospital revenues will be reinvested in the system resulting in increasing patient access of essential services. The patient tower project responds to increased demand in patient care for medical specialties and sub specialties offered to the region only at OU Medicine, Inc. In addition to providing these essential services, OU Medicine, Inc. is the largest provider of charity care in the state of Oklahoma and the essential safety net hospital in a state with a large, underserved population. The $30 million cost for the bond issuance breaks into two parts – insurance and cost of issuance. The way the bonds were structured, the cost of the transaction, fees and interest, was reduced significantly over the life of the bonds. The cost of issuance is competitive at less than 1 percent.
