Hate Speech Implementation standards Hate Speech Highlights - What type of statement would count as “support” for death/disease/harm? - - All types, including—aspirational, conditional, advocating, etc. Does calling a group of people racist, homophobic, Islamophobic, sexist or bigots qualify as a statement of inferiority? - We want to allow space for members or marginalized groups and activists to share their experiences and to call out racism. That’s why we allow people to call groups of people “racist/sexist/homophobic/Islamophobic” etc. Hate Speech Highlights - Can you say you’re a racist on Facebook? - No. By definition, as a racist, you hate on at least one of our characteristics that are protected. Claiming that only one PC [protected characteristic] matters (similar to saying you’re a racist, you can target multiple groups on the basis of their protected characteristics at once by saying that they do not matter). Hate Speech Highlights - “White people are all racist.” (Allowed) “Black people are all racist.” (Allowed) “I am racist.” (Violating) “I am racist and proud.” (Violating)—celebrating “I am proud to beat Jews.” (Violating)—violent act “I am product to be a Nazi.” (Violating)—representation of a Hate Group “I am proud to be a rapist.” (Violating)—violent act/celebrating crime Hate Speech Highlights - Q: What is our stance on white supremacy, white nationalism and white separatism? - - We don’t allow praise, support and representation of white supremacy as an ideology. Eg. “White supremacy is the right thing”; “I am a white supremacist”; “Join the next White Supremacy rally!” We allow praise, support and representation of white nationalism as an ideology. Eg. “White nationalism is the only way”; “I am a proud white nationalist” We allow praise, support and representation of white separatism as an ideology. Eg. “White separatism is the perfect solution to America’s problems”; “I am a white separatist”. By the same token, we allow to call for the creation of white ethno-states (Eg. “The US should be a white-only nation”) Hate Speech Highlights - White nationalism and calling for an exclusively white state is not a violation for our policy unless it explicitly excludes other PCs. Training Notes: White supremacy or white supremacism is a racist ideology based upon the belief that white people are superior in many ways to people of other races and that therefore white people should be dominant over other races. White supremacy has roots in scientific racism and it often relies on pseudoscientific arguments. Like most similar movements such as neo-Nazism, white supremacists typically oppose people of color, Jews, and non-Protestants Training Notes: White Supremacy: Ideology: based on the belief that white people are superior (intellectually, culturally, physically) to people of other races and that therefore white people should be dominant over all other races. Although there doesn't seem to be total agreement among academics on whether white supremacy *always* implies racial *hatred*, the fact that it is based on a *racist premise* is widely acknowledged. Historical Context: as a sort of pseudoscientific theory, it was used to justify slavery in the US, Apartheid in South Africa, Nazi Germany, etc. Designated Hate Orgs like the KKK and Aryan Nations, among others, promulgate white supremacy. Media reports also use the terms interchangeably (for example, referring to David Duke as white supremacist even though he doesn't explicitly identify himself as one). http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/david-duke-charlottesville-rally-trump_us_598 f3ca8e4b0909642974a10 http://www.newsweek.com/duke-trump-thanks-antifa-651184 Training Notes: White Nationalism: Ideology: objective is to "develop and maintain a white national identity" (=inclusion of PC, allowed). White nationalists seek to ensure the "survival of the white race", and the cultures of historically white states. They believe that white people should maintain their majority in majority-white countries, as well as political and economic dominance. They oppose mass-immigration and multiculturalism, as they see them as threats to white identity. Some argue that it amounts to what they call “white genocide”, a popular conspiracy theory among the alt-right. Training Notes: Context: extreme right movement and ideology, but it doesn't seem to be *always *associated* with racism (at least not explicitly). In fact, some white nationalists carefully avoid the term *supremacy* because it has negative connotations. Sources/Background: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_nationalism http://www.anthropology-news.org/index.php/2017/05/18/when-white-nationalismbecame-popular/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_genocide_conspiracy_theory Training Notes: White Separatism: Ideology: slightly more extreme version of white nationalism, as it seeks to create “white only states” (as opposed to reinforce white dominance in white-majority ones). Academics noted "a distinction between the supremacist desire to dominate (as in apartheid, slavery, or segregation) and complete separation by race". Racial separatism differs from racial segregation, as it advocates separate states for different races rather than discriminatory laws for different races in a multiracial society (such as South Africa under Apartheid, Jim Crow laws in US, etc). Training Notes: Context: calling for a PC-only entity (state, club, bathrooms, etc) is not a violation. Sources/background: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_separatism -> Corollary: should we allow calling for ethno-states? Eg. “The US should be a white-only nation”
