As Republican governors work to make sure students are equipped with the tools to succeed both in the classroom and beyond, many states are faced with the challenge of turning around underperforming school districts. During this panel, states will discuss the challenges of transforming turnaround schools and share what resources were successful in ensuring effective progress. 10:15 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Education Policy Session II—21st Century Skills for 21st Century Jobs Data reveals that employers across the United States continue to face an increasing skills gap as they seek to hire employees. A recent survey found that over 75 percent of manufacturers surveyed have difficulties finding skilled workers. Through partnerships with the business community, to innovative STEM and computer science education programs, to increased opportunities for vocational students, GOP governors are working to ensure students emerge from school fully prepared to join the workforce pipeline. Today, Republican governors are developing anti-poverty initiatives to lift families out of poverty and into the workforce, in order to develop a better quality of life. Whether through programmatic reforms, healthcare efforts, or workforce programs, GOP states are leading the nation in addressing the needs of the under and unemployed. During this panel, states will discuss what anti-poverty reforms are working in their state and how Republican governors can work together to address the needs of the most vulnerable. 8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Breakfast and Energy Policy Session I—Affordable and Reliable: All-of-the-Above Energy Strategies An all-of-the-above energy strategy is implemented differently from state to state. And as a result of our country’s diverse geological and geographical makeup, some states rely on oil and natural gas as a large portion of their energy portfolio. To others, a sound energy policy places a greater emphasis on renewable sources including biofuels, wind, hydro and solar. Regardless of the unique landscapes, Republican governors are committed to utilizing all available resources in an efficient and responsible way. This panel will discuss the diversity of the 31 GOP states and the distinct approaches to pursuing an energy policy that is in the best interest of the state, its people, and the economy. 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Healthcare Policy Session II—Road to Recovery: How GOP Governors Are Addressing the Drug Crisis Drug abuse is an epidemic affecting individuals living in every state, and a crisis affecting families without respect to income, age or race. Republican governors are tackling the opioid and heroin epidemic through commonsense reforms aimed at providing solutions for families caught in this destructive cycle. During this panel, states will share how they’ve helped individuals and communities battle the disease of addiction and discuss effective reforms as Republican governors work together to tackle this epidemic. 2 000062 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Energy Policy Session II—State Solutions: Managing Lands and Resources A key function of state government is the stewardship over its natural resources. No one is more invested or concerned about the health and vitality of the states’ waterways, air quality, mineral and energy deposits, and wildlife habitats than the individual states and their governors. However, the state’s ability to properly oversee these resources has become increasingly hampered as the Obama Administration continues to layer on onerous, and sometimes conflicting, federal rules and regulations. In spite of attempts by federal agencies to dictate state policies, GOP governors continue to lead by example and strike the right balance between good stewardship and responsible development. 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Luncheon ACCOMMODATIONS The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay 1 Miramontes Point Rd. In spite of attempts by federal agencies to dictate state 2 000065 policies, GOP governors continue to lead by example and strike the right balance between good stewardship and responsible development. 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Luncheon 3 000066 RGPPC HEALTHCARE SYMPOSIUM The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay  Half Moon Bay, CA Tuesday, June 28 – Wednesday, June 29  SCHEDULE OF EVENTS TUESDAY, JUNE 28 12:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Registration and Hospitality 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Staff Only Session (Governor Staff Only) 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Reception and Dinner WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Registration and Hospitality ** Breakfast buffet will open at 8:00 a.m. ** 8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Breakfast and Policy Session I—Breaking the Cycle of Poverty In 2014 the United States Census Bureau reported that 46.7 million Americans live in poverty.
