Washingt “The Washington State Department of Transportation takes fish-barrier corrections seriously and we will continue to work with tribal partners to improve access to more stream habitat. We have had a fish-barrier-correction program in place since 1991 to identify, prioritize and correct fish barriers on the highway system. Over the past few decades, we have corrected more than 300 barriers statewide and improved access to more than 1,000 miles of stream habitat. We have records for about 2,000 fish barriers statewide, with about 1,000 applicable to the federal injunction. Between 2013 and the end of the 2017-19 biennium, WSDOT will have invested more than $200 million and corrected 63 barriers applicable to the injunction. For the 2017-19 biennium, our current funding is $108.5 million. The federal injunction directs WSDOT to correct about 425 remaining culverts and improve access to about 1,000 miles of potential habitat by 2030. WSDOT estimates that it will cost $3.7 billion to fully meet the requirements of the injunction. Additional program funding will be needed to meet this goal. We will continue to work with the Governor and Legislature to secure the funding to remove these barriers and meet the terms of the injunctionon Department of Transportation Statement
