There a r e u s u a l l y a b o u t 50-60 people i n a t t e n d a n c e . We s t a r t o f f by g o i n g around t h e room and a s k i n g everyone f o r a b r i e f i n t r o d u c t i o n , and t h e n go on i n t o t h e program. A sandwich lunch i s brought i n , and we u s u a l l y b r e a k up by 4:30 o r 5:OO. The program d o e s n ' t g e t s e t u n t i l t h e t i m e approaches, b u t I can f o r e c a s t t h a t we w i l l have a s e c t i o n on l o g i c a l f a l l a c i e s i n t k e immigration d e b a t e . The chap from whom I ' m t a k i n g a l o g i c c s u r s e a t t h e l o c a l community c o l l e g e w i l l be t h e r e t o h e l p moderate t h e s e s s i o n . A f t e r an i n i t i a l > r e s e n t a t i o n , we w i l l b r e a k up i n t o s m a l l e r groups of s i x t o e i g h t , and w i l l have some examples f o r p e o p l e t o work through and a n a l y z e . I hope t o have a n o t h e r p a r t of t h e program on t h e e t h i c s of immigration, a s a new book w i l l be o u t by t h e n t h a t c o u l d f e r t i l i z e t h e d i s c u s s i o n . A s mentioned, I ' m keeping Donna, Michael S t r u e b e r , and Tom Schmidt informed of o u r s c h e d u l e , and hope t h a t any o r a l l of them ( a n d o t h e r s of y o u r t r u s t e e s ) w i l l j o i n u s i f t h e y l i k e . These have g e n e r a l l y been q u i t e good s e s s i o n s , and t h e y p r o v i d e an o p p o r t u n i t y t o meet a number of t h e key t h i n k e r s and w r i t e r s on o u r i s s u e s . Regarding t h e l o g i c c o u r s e , I decided t o t a k e t h i s because I have developed q u i t e an i n t e r e s t i n l o g i c a l f a l l a c i e s i n t h e immigration d e b a t e ( a l o n g w i t h t h e q u e s t i o n of e t h i c s , and t h e r o l e of emotions i n t h e d e b a t e ) . I hope t h a t by g a i n i n g a b e t t e r u n d e r s t a n d i n g of t h e s e f a c t o r s w i l l make u s i n t o morE e f f e c t i v e d e b a t e r s , and w i l l h e l p move t h i n g s forward. Mary Lou and I a r e going t o spend t h e month of A p r i l i n s o u t h e r n Arizona. There a r e a number of n a t u r a l a r e a s t h e r e t h a t we want t o s e e , and we w i l l d o u b t l e s s go back t o t h e American Museum of N a t u r a l H i s t o r y ' s f i e l d s t a t i o n a t P o r t a l , where we have been t w i c e b e f o r e . I t ' s g r e a t f u n t o s i t i n t h e y a r d and watch t h e acorn woodpeckers, and t h e h a l f dozen s p e c i e s of humming b i r d s t h a t i n h a b i t t h e a r e a .
