p a r t i c u l a r l y i n t e r e s t e d t o s e e t h e a r t i c l e on b e e s c a r r y i n g t h e
v i r u s a g a i n s t c o r n e a r worm l a r v a e on t h e i r rounds t o t h e
flowers.
Ingenious. The a r t i c l e on t h e l o s s of languages
p r o j e c t e d f o r t h e n e x t c e n t u r y w a s a l s o of i n t e r e s t . C e r t a i n l y
w i t h t h e g l o b a l i z a t i o n of t r a d e and t o u r i s m , and w i t h t h e
e l e c t r o n i c s r e v o l u t i o n , many of t h e s m a l l e r languages w i l l be
hard p r e s s e d t o s u r v i v e . I a g r e e w i t h G a r r e t t t h a t we should
f o s t e r d i v e r s i t y between n a t i o n s , n o t w i t h i n them, hence I t m
s o r r y t o s e e t h i s t y p e of d i v e r s i t y l o s t .
The a r t i c l e on t h e P e n t e c o s t a l c h u r c h e s i n C a l i f o r n i a
r u n n i n g a Itcoyotett s e r v i c e w a s a l s o v e r y good. We w i l l l i k e l y
run it i n t h e n e x t i s s u e of The S o c i a l C o n t r a c t , which w i l l c a r r y
a number of a r t i c l e s on t h e r o l e of churches i n t h e immigration
question.
Concerning t h e W r i t e r s t Workshop, you can c e r t a i n l y w a i t t o
d e c i d e on a t t e n d i n g up u n t i l t h e v e r y l a s t minute. The u s u a l
r o u t i n e i s f o r t h e a t t e n d e e s t o g a t h e r on Wednesday evening
(October 18, 1995) f o r an i n f o r m a l d i n n e r , where we have no
program and j u s t have a chance t o c h a t and renew ( o r make)
a c q u a i n t a n c e s . Donna a t t e n d e d t h e d i n n e r l a s t y e a r , and s h e c a n
b r i e f you on i t .
Not everyone comes t o t h e d i n n e r , however - some j u s t a r r i v e
i n t i m e f o r t h e meeting which s t a r t s t h e n e x t morning. There a r e
u s u a l l y a b o u t 50-60 people i n a t t e n d a n c e . We s t a r t o f f by g o i n g
around t h e room and a s k i n g everyone f o r a b r i e f i n t r o d u c t i o n , and
t h e n go on i n t o t h e program. A sandwich lunch i s brought i n , and
we u s u a l l y b r e a k up by 4:30 o r 5:OO.
The program d o e s n ' t g e t s e t u n t i l t h e t i m e approaches, b u t I
can f o r e c a s t t h a t we w i l l have a s e c t i o n on l o g i c a l f a l l a c i e s i n
t k e immigration d e b a t e . The chap from whom I ' m t a k i n g a l o g i c
c s u r s e a t t h e l o c a l community c o l l e g e w i l l be t h e r e t o h e l p
moderate t h e s e s s i o n . A f t e r an i n i t i a l > r e s e n t a t i o n , we w i l l

 b r e a k up i n t o s m a l l e r groups of s i x t o e i g h t , and w i l l have some
examples f o r p e o p l e t o work through and a n a l y z e .
I hope t o have a n o t h e r p a r t of t h e program on t h e e t h i c s of
immigration, a s a new book w i l l be o u t by t h e n t h a t c o u l d
f e r t i l i z e t h e d i s c u s s i o n . Also, K a t h a r i n e B e t t s from A u s t r a l i a
w i l l be a t t e n d i n g , and I w i l l a s k h e r t o speak, e i t h e r on a p a p e r
s h e h a s j u s t w r i t t e n on t h e n a t i o n s t a t e , o r on t h e new s t u d y of

We would o n l y need t o know a few days i n advance whether you
and Brownie and o t h e r s a r e going t o a t t e n d , s o we c a n o r d e r
meals. A s mentioned, I ' m keeping Donna, Michael S t r u e b e r , and
Tom Schmidt informed of o u r s c h e d u l e , and hope t h a t any o r a l l of
them ( a n d o t h e r s of y o u r t r u s t e e s ) w i l l j o i n u s i f t h e y l i k e .
These have g e n e r a l l y been q u i t e good s e s s i o n s , and t h e y p r o v i d e
an o p p o r t u n i t y t o meet a number of t h e key t h i n k e r s and w r i t e r s
on o u r i s s u e s .
Regarding t h e l o g i c c o u r s e , I decided t o t a k e t h i s because I
have developed q u i t e an i n t e r e s t i n l o g i c a l f a l l a c i e s i n t h e
immigration d e b a t e ( a l o n g w i t h t h e q u e s t i o n of e t h i c s , and t h e
r o l e of emotions i n t h e d e b a t e ) . I hope t h a t by g a i n i n g a b e t t e r
u n d e r s t a n d i n g of t h e s e f a c t o r s w i l l make u s i n t o morE e f f e c t i v e
d e b a t e r s , and w i l l h e l p move t h i n g s forward.
Mary Lou and I a r e going t o spend t h e month of A p r i l i n
s o u t h e r n Arizona. There a r e a number of n a t u r a l a r e a s t h e r e t h a t
we want t o s e e , and we w i l l d o u b t l e s s go back t o t h e American
Museum of N a t u r a l H i s t o r y ' s f i e l d s t a t i o n a t P o r t a l , where we
have been t w i c e b e f o r e .
I t ' s g r e a t f u n t o s i t i n t h e y a r d and
watch t h e acorn woodpeckers, and t h e h a l f dozen s p e c i e s of
humming b i r d s t h a t i n h a b i t t h e a r e a . There a r e good h i k i n g
o p p o r t u n i t i e s a s w e l l . We w i l l be c o n t a c t i n g C u r t i s S c a i f e i n
t h e hopes t h a t we can g e t t o g e t h e r w i t h him. We w i l l a l s o want
t o v i s i t t h e I N S a t Nogales, s i n c e t h e i l l e g a l s a r e now coming
t h r o u g h Arizona f o l i o w i n g t h e (more o r l e s s ) crackdowns t h a t have
been i n s t i t u t e d a t E l Paso and San Diego.
I a l w a y ~e n j o y t h e l a s t couple weeks of February and t h e
f i r s t few of March - i t ' s u s u a l l y c o l d b u t sunny, and I need t h a t
sun t o keep my a t t i t u d e a d j u s t e d !
