Prairie Village Noise Ordinance Discussion

Current Noise Ordinance
• “Disturbing the Peace” – Section 11-201 of Prairie Village Municipal
Code (conflicting language in 2-125 and 8-504 that needs to be
cleaned up)
• Applies to all noise within the city – such as construction, music,
neighborhood parties, etc.
• Noise is permitted at the following times:
• 7 a.m. – 10 p.m. on weekdays
• 8 a.m. – midnight on weekends

 Enforcement of the Noise Ordinance

• Majority of complaints are regarding construction starting before 7
a.m.
• Notice of noise ordinance is provided to all contractors and printed on
building permit
• Violations should be reported to Police Department at non-emergency
number (complaints often come in hours after the violation occurred,
which makes enforcement difficult)

Create a noise ordinance specific to construction noise and the
operation of heavy equipment
• Staff does not recommend changing the 7 a.m. start time on
weekdays; changes would affect Public Works mowing and
street crews as well as trash collection

2.

Amend the current noise ordinance to be more restrictive on all
types of noise
