Update on Phillips 66 station There has been much speculation about the future of the Wanamaker Phillips 66 sta- tion at the comer of Franklin Road and Southeastern Avenue. Representatives from Keil Broth- er Oil, Inc., the company which owns the station, and from the Indiana DepartmentofEnviron- mental Management (IDEM) were able to answer some of the questions that area residents have been asking. In June, a leak of one of the underground gasoline storage tanks was reported by workers from Indiana Bell who were repairing lines in front of the station. At that time, the Marion County Health Department came and tested the well water in the area and it was determined that there was no contamination of the aquifer that supplies waterto the wells of the homes in the area. County Health also found no contamination of the water supply for the wells of the Summerhill subdivision cunent- 1y under construction north of the station. The Underground Tanks division of the IDEM has been supervising the site since June. Carla McDonald, IDEM site coordinator, explained the current status of the project to help clarify the situation in response to con- cerns from the community. McDonald said that there was some soil contamination limited to the property of the station. Ground water contamination was found at a surface level of ten feet and extended to the-west property line at Franklin Road and for a short distance into the ?eld across Southeastern Avenue. McDonald stressed that the contamination was limited to surface water only and did not affect the quality of well water in the area. As pan of the clean-up process, the station closed and the under- ground tanks were excavated and removed. Activity at the site has halted while IDEM waits for two reports to be ?led by the environmental consulting ?rm ?Caprtt. One hired by Keil Brothers. report will detail the closure of the underground tanks. The second will outline the boring program which located the source of the contamination. Once those reports have been received and reviewed by IDEM, Keil Brother may proceed with the ?nal clean- up process. that Keil Brorhers had been extremely cooperative in all phases of the operation. Greg Pence, spokesman for the Keil Brothers Oil Company, says that once the contamination has been eliminated, his company plans to reopen the station. Keil Brothers plans to operate a gasoline/convenience store and is currently looking at options. The company plans to either expand the current building or replace it with a new larger one. Mr. Pence anticipates that construction plans will be ?nalized within the next few months. Submitted by Cathy Burton Franldm Township 3/23/91 McDonald stated ROUTING -.TRANSMITTAL were?
