S. EPA investigated the Kiel Brothers Oil Company as a Preliminary Assessment/Site Inspection to determine whether it warrants listing under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA). This site is suspected as being the source of the trichloroethylene (TCE) contamination. - Kiel Brothers Oil Company is an active gasoline service station and is located at 850 South Jonesville Road in Garden City. Bartholomew County, Indiana. Garden City is a small community south of Columbus, Indiana and all residences have private wells as their source of drinking water. Approximately one-half mile downgradient' to the south of the Kiel Brothers Oil Company site is the well ?eld for the City of Columbus. This well ?eld provides two-thirds of the water to the City of Columbus residences. Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) identi?ed this site as the source of a TCE plume in 1989 through a complaint of odors in a drinking water well. 'Invesdgations of the down gradient residential drinking water wells identi?ed TCE concentrations above maximum contaminant level Through subsequent subsurface investigations, the TCE plume was identi?ed in an upgradient monitoring well which indicates an upgradient source. Since the 1989 discovery of the TCE contamination, the groundwater plume has migrated further downgradient of the Kiel Brothers Oil Company site and is impacting a Mobile Home Park and adjacent residence- Recycled Paper 9 An Equal Opportunity Employer Please Recycle a 09-24-02 14:22 REGION 5 312 6741 T-355 F-BUZ 0 INDIANA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT We make Indiana a cleaner, healthier place to live. ?ml?I?m: Frank O'Bannon 100 North Senate Avenue Govcmot P.0.
