June 27, 2018 Request for Proposal: The Works of J. Earle Bowden Bas-relief Description: a bas-relief themed on the works of J. Earle Bowden for installation on a concrete or concrete block sitting wall (by others). Bas relief will be a combination of books and replications of J. Earle Bowden cartoons along the length of the wall. See attached document for locations and approximate sizes. Design and materials should be appropriate for exterior location, ease of maintenance, and resistant to damage. Deadline for Submission: July 13, 2018 Mission: The SouthTowne Development, Caldwell Associates Architects, and Studer Properties are working to provide permanent public art installations at the corners of Jefferson & Romana and Jefferson & Intendencia Streets. The purpose of these installations is to provide a gathering place for people visiting downtown Pensacola and to embrace the history of Pensacola. With this site being the former location for the Pensacola News Journal, we intend to pay homage to J. Earl Bowden. Mr. Bowden was a wellknown journalist who began his career at the Pensacola News Journal on September 30, 1953 as a sports writer, eventually becoming its editor-in-chief from 1966 -1997. In Mr. Bowden’s illustrious career, he accomplished many things including serving as a Captain in the US Air Force Reserves, teaching journalistic writing at the University of West Florida, campaigning to establish the Gulf Islands National Seashore, and helping to establish the Seville Square Historic District. He also wrote, edited, and illustrated several books. Mr. Bowden’s many contributions to historic preservation helped shape Pensacola into what it is today. Goals:  Engage the Gulf Coast artist community.  Create an exciting and active public space that celebrates this dynamic Pensacola citizen and our history.  Select a dedicated and qualified artist or artist team that can demonstrate artistic excellence while completing this project on time and within budget. Location: Bas-relief is to be installed on a concrete sitting wall in front of the SouthTowne development on the corner of Jefferson & Intendencia Street. Earl Bowden’s sketches may complete a proposal in accordance with the requirements below. Experience working on similar projects, public projects, and art located in the exterior environment will be a consideration for selection in addition to the quality of the proposed design. Application Requirements:  A narrative and design illustrating the concept is required for each submission. Include supplemental information such as medium, materials, and dimensions.  A project budget should including the artist(s) fee, supplies, and any associated costs for complete installation of the work.  A project schedule itemized by design, owner reviews, fabrication, and installation.  The design of the adjacent sitework and plaza is currently in progress, so the artist will be required to coordinate with the design team for a cohesive overall project.  All components must be submitted in digital format on a USB to Michelle Burch at 116 N Tarragona Street, Pensacola, Florida. Acceptable formats include; .psd, .jpeg, .png, .doc, .pdf  Supporting materials, including images and reviews of previously completed works are required. Work similar in scope including bas-reliefs, sculpture, public art, and/or art made for the exterior environment will be given additional consideration. Examples should describe size, materials, cost, and location of other art works. References for earlier projects are encouraged.
