Here is what was sent out to the volunteers yesterday. Thanks. Thank you so much for volunteering to serve as role players for our crowd control training on Wednesday. This is the first time that the Sheriff’s Office and Washington State Patrol have brought our teams together to train, and it simply would not be possible without your assistance. The purpose of this email is to provide you with the information you will need to prepare for Wednesday. Additional details about your specific roles will be discussed at the briefing at 1:00pm. The location of this training is Whatcom Community College. For security reasons, and to truly test the response capabilities of the teams, this location has not been released publicly. The teams themselves will not know the location until their operational briefing at 1:00pm on Wednesday. They will then respond to the college from another location in Bellingham. For these reasons please do not disclose the location. The attached map shows the boundaries of the exercise on campus. The easiest way for you to access the area will be to enter the parking lot on “Whatcom Way” off Stuart Road. Then follow the blue arrows to the area designated for role player parking. Your briefing and staging area is in Room 209 in Kelly Hall. Alan Cheesman and other Sheriff’s Office personnel will be on scene to help direct you. Sergeant Funk will conduct your briefing. Refreshments will be provided. The current weather forecast for Wednesday afternoon is 49 degrees and partly sunny. Let’s hope that holds true. But just in case, please be prepared to be outside in the cold, rain, or wind. Some of you will be asked to sit on the ground for up to an hour. Others will be on your feet for up to two hours. And a few lucky ones will get to protest inside a building! Currently there are about 50 role players expected. You will be broken up into 4 groups with different assignments, and differing perspectives on the subject of the protest. Some of you will be carrying signs, some of you will be locked together in what is called a “sleeping dragon”, and some of you will have a special treat for the cops. ;-) Please feel free to share your thoughts about what skills you might bring to the table. Some people don’t mind yelling at cops or being loud, some have a hard time with it. Some people don’t mind being arrested, some don’t like it. You get the point. We are looking for a few role players to dress in all black to simulate an anarchist group. This group also covers their faces with masks or bandanas. If this is something you are equipped to do, please let me know by emailing sgatterman@whatcomcounty.us . We only need 5-10 volunteer anarchist. And just to be clear…gas, pepper spray, flash bangs, or impact munitions will not be used during this training. There likely will be a smoke canister ignited at some point, but this is what we call “inert” smoke, and it will not contain any chemicals. Likewise…role players may not possess any firearms, knives, pepper spray, or other weapons during the training. You will be checked during the briefing. Due to the operational security needs related to our tactics, and the safety of some members th t l l hibit d f t ki h t id d i th serving on the teams, role players are prohibited from taking photos or video during the training. There will be authorized Sheriff’s Office personnel capturing the event both on the ground, and in the air. Following the training you are welcome to take pictures, but you must obtain permission from any deputies or troopers that will be shown in the pictures. I apologize in advance for having to be so restrictive about this, but it is absolutely critical to the safety of our teams. Again, thank you for volunteering to help us out. I look forward to meeting you on Wednesday! Lt Steve Gatterman Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office 360-778-6623 GROUP CONTACTS: Please forward this email to your volunteers. Thank you! Can we still have them participate? Their info is below: Please let me know what else you may need. I realize they likely need to fill out waivers. If so, can this be done tomorrow on site?
