The Agency appreciates efforts taken in notifying us of the results from the drinking water sampling performed at the Hunters Point Shipyard on December 16, 1993. We will take every measure available to inform our subtenants of potential health risks associated with the lead and copper found in the drinking water. However, to do so, we need more information and we have significant questions and concerns regarding the limited information you provided. Please respond to the following: • According to your letter, the initial sampling was performed in December 1993. Why the delay in notification to the Agency? Were other tenants notified? If so, which ones? • Where were the samples taken and what were they tested for? Were other metals tested? Were other parameters like tds and tph tested? • What steps has the Navy completed in identifying the source of lead since the initial sampling was conducted in December 1993? What has the Navy done since 1993 to address this issue? Ms. Beverly Freitas Page 2 August 13, 1997 451-03697-004 • Has the Navy informed all parties at risk (i.e., children, pregnant or nursing women, etc.) of the exceeded lead levels? • Has the Navy informed the state and local regulatory agencies of the exceeded lead levels? If so, which agencies were notified? • What is the schedule for the Navy's proposed follow-up sampling efforts? What will it be sampling for? When will the results be available to the Agency for review? • Your letter indicated that samples were taken at each entry point to the distribution system. Where are these locations (specific buildings?) Why weren't exit points sampled? • When will the public education program be delivered to the tenants and affiliated parties? • What specific steps will the Navy take to address the long term lead problem? The Agency would like to inform its subtenants of this matter as soon as possible and to do so, it is very critical that a timely response be provided to the questions above. Again, your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Sincerely, /.s:./ June Bartholomew Property Management Supervisor be: Byron Rhett Martha Walters Jim Karpiak David Madway Louis Preston File
