Of?ce of the BOARD OF SELECTMEN ABBOT HALL 188 Washington Street MARBLEHEAD, MASSACHUSETTS 01945 Jackie Belf?Becker, Chair John J. McGinn Harry C. Christensen Jr. Town Administrator M. C. Moses Grader Judith R. Jacobi James E. Nye Honorable John G. Roberts The Chief Justice of the United States The Supreme Court One First Street NE Washington, DC 20543 June 6, 2018 Dear Chief Justice, The Marblehead Board of Selectmen respectfully requests the Supreme Court, when discussing political redistricting known as ?Gerrymandering?, use a hard pronouncing the word as GaryMandering. One of Marblehead?s ?nest, Elbridge Gerry, signed both the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation. Gerry served as Governor of Massachusetts and Vice President of the United States under President James Madison. The term ?Gerrymander? developed when Governor Elbridge Gerry was involved in redistricting in 1812 that resulted in a district that resembled the shape of a salamander. We are very proud of Marblehead?s place in the early history of our country. Marblehead is also the of Joseph Story, still the youngest Supreme Court Justice who served on the Supreme Court from 1811-1845. Your attention to this matter is greatly appreciated.
