J. Charles Jennett January 15, 1996 Page 2 In the short run, we need to put in place a locally loaded database system which allow our users to use the LUIS interface to access periodical mdexes, abstracts, and where possible, full text data. This new system, called InfoShareTM would, in addition, allow us to share databases and their cost with other libraries, most hkely 1n the beginning, USC which already has this system It will also allow us to have a feature known as ?link to holdings? which provides the user with the call number of the journal in which the article retrieved is located. This is a signi?cant Improvement to our existing DORIS system which is separate from LUIS. The other aspect is providing our users access to a wealth of information available. To accomplish this task, we need to provide them with workstations which are sophisticated enough to provide this access. These work stations would allow us to. implement the ?One Service Point? concept since they could access all of the Libranes? systems. The use of microcomputers with Web Browsers will allow faculty, students and others to easily access InfoShareTM databases, the online catalog, om' locally mounted databases, government cd-roms, and the World Wide Web. Furthermore, having retrieved the information, the researcher can combine the results of the various searches into a uni?ed whole. We would retain a number of the existing ?dumb terminals? for users who only want or need access to the online catalog and/or the new electronic indexing and abstracting system. Another aspect of this addition of new workstations is the training required. To allow for training to be done, a part of our proposal calls for an electronic training facility to be developed in one of our two instructional spaces. the funds requested are approved, we see the following improvements would res t. 1) Implementation of InfoShareTM to replace the current DORIS system. Bene?ts include: Use of the LUIS interface and protocol for users, link to holdings, ability to connect to other libraries systems to share access to databases AW 2) Provide Workstations to implement the ?One Service Point? concept which would access both our electronic resources locally and on the World Wide Web. Addition of 75 or so PC workstations for use by Library users: Bene?ts include: Improved access to LUIS and InfoShareTM, many of the CD ROM databases available in the Libraries, Graphical User Interface, ability to access the dramatically increasing amount of US Government ormauon bemg made available only in CD ROM format.
