Many countries around the world are looking at us and wondering about our credibility and our commitment. They ask, ?Do the people still believe? Do they believe enough to sacrifice for themselves, to say nothing of sacrificing for others?? They are asking the right questions. Many of us must ask them too. Our magnificent democratic system of government is the best in the world. Its inequities are few and our freedoms are many. We have existed for 200 years. We have stability, and all through our history we have had a commitment to freedom -- freedom of speech, of religion, of enterprise. If we are to maintain our freedoms, we must be committed. To be committed, we must believe in the worth of our system. Each of us should make a commitment to participate in public affairs, to help in our communities, to do something for someone else. In these days of cynicism, there is an obvious question: Do we feel as strongly as Horace Mann did when he said, ?Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity?? Answer: I think we do. I 5333 we must. i 110313.
