This was an increase of 6 percent from the 2016 total expenditures. Feed expense, which declined 3 percent to $1.89 billion, represented the largest single production expense in Wisconsin in 2017, accounting for 16 percent of the total. Expenditures for Farm Services were the second largest expense category, totaling $1.63 billion and accounted for 14 percent of the total. This was up 5 percent from 2016. The largest percentage increases were for Miscellaneous Capital expenses (up 150 percent), Trucks and Autos (up 60 percent), Other Farm Machinery (up 40 percent), and Tractors and Self-propelled Farm Machinery (up 28 percent).
