This publication, which is available on our website, is a statistical profile of Wisconsin’s agriculture and includes information at the county level. In 2016, Wisconsin maintained its position as the number one state in American, cheddar and total cheese production, dry whey for human consumption, milk goat inventory, mink pelts produced, corn harvested for silage, snap beans for processing, and cranberry production. Wisconsin cows produced 14 percent of the nation’s milk supply. Wisconsin also ranked second in the number of organic farms. In 2016, crop conditions were some of the best ever, and Wisconsin set a record corn for grain yield of 178 bushels per acre and a yield of 55 bushels per acre for soybeans. Throughout this publication you will find many other interesting statistics about Wisconsin’s diverse and dynamic agriculture industry. NASS has begun preparations for the 2017 Census of Agriculture. Questionnaires will be mailed to every farm in the United States starting in December. We encourage all Wisconsin farmers to complete the Census of Agriculture as soon as they receive the questionnaire. The Census of Agriculture is the only uniform, comprehensive and impartial agriculture data for every county in the nation. Data from the Census of Agriculture is used in developing farm policy and programs, infrastructure funding, and other important agribusiness decisions. More details about the upcoming Census of Agriculture can be found at www.agcensus.usda.gov. Publication and dissemination of agricultural statistics is only possible with cooperation of farmers, agribusiness, commodity groups, and countless others who gave their valuable time to provide the information for the content within this publication. Without their cooperation and support in providing timely and accurate data, this information would not be available to the agricultural community in Wisconsin. I also want to thank the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture enumerators for their outstanding effort in collecting and providing quality statistics for Wisconsin. In addition, the Wisconsin Field Office has a dedicated staff who put this publication together. Everyone is committed to the work they do, and I am thankful for their dedication to Wisconsin agriculture. I hope you find this information beneficial for your agricultural interests. Throughout the year, NASS releases many other reports which are posted at www.nass.usda.gov. Please contact me anytime with your comments, questions, or requests for assistance. Sincerely, Greg A. Bussler State Statistician September 2017 Wisconsin 2017 Agricultural Statistics Thank you for taking a look at the 2017 Wisconsin Agricultural Statistics. I hope you find this publication as beneficial as we do at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. Whether you are looking for one specific fact or paging through to get a big picture of Wisconsin agriculture, you are in the right place. In agriculture, farmers are always working to do more with less, and in 2016, farmers delivered just that in our fields and orchards. Wisconsin celebrated record high production levels and yields per acre for corn for grain and soybeans. Last year, Wisconsin farmers grew 178 bushels of corn for grain per acre and 55 bushels of soybeans per acre. The state’s cranberry farmers also produced the highest yield on record, at 288 barrels per acre, maintaining Wisconsin’s leadership as the top producer. The state’s cherry growers boasted a yield of 8,000 pounds per acre, which is, again, the highest on record. Wisconsin continues to maintain its leadership as America’s Dairyland with more dairy farms than any other state. In 2016, Wisconsin surpassed 30 billion pounds of milk production in a single year for the first time. The state’s dairy processors set a record of their own, producing 3.2 billion pounds of cheese. Wisconsin’s contribution to the growing specialty cheese industry continues to be evident. In 2016, 24 percent of Wisconsin’s total cheese production was specialty cheese. If you only have a moment, note Wisconsin’s rank in agriculture nationally on page three. Wisconsin is first in the nation in a variety of areas from milk goats to snap beans for processing to mink pelts. Our diversity in Wisconsin is indeed our greatest strength. On that page, you will see what makes me so proud to be part of Wisconsin agriculture and optimistic for what is yet to come. I appreciate the work of the National Agricultural Statistics Service to compile this information annually. This publication would not be possible without the contributions from Wisconsin farmers or the support of the agricultural industry. Each year, the Wisconsin Agricultural Statistics allows us all to understand our current landscape, compare historical patterns and plan for the future. Thank you for being a part of it. reported in these tables include only averages of ‘arm’s length’ transactions. Sales made under other than normal market conditions (such as family sales or foreclosures) are not included in this report. Sales are reviewed by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, Bureau of Equalization. With each sale of a parcel of land, the buyer is required to file a Wisconsin Real Estate Transfer Return, documenting the parcel size, sale price, present use, and intended use of the property. State appraisers inspect the site and verify the transfer return. The sales data in this report are a summary of the Wisconsin Real Estate Transfer Returns. Specifics on land sales transactions within a certain county can be obtained by contacting the Department of Revenue directly or at www.revenue.wi.gov/retr. This report was compiled in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, Bureau of Equalization. Wisconsin 2017 Agricultural Statistics 11 Crops The 2016 planting season opened with soggy field conditions and below normal snow cover due to a warm, wet March. Wet soils in the northern portions of the state delayed the start of tillage and planting there. But fields dried up quickly in the southern portions of the state, and warm, sunny weather during April accelerated early fieldwork in those areas. A hard frost during the week ending May 15 damaged some fruit blossoms and emerging crops, though most new plantings bounced back quickly. Rainfall was patchy and intermittent in May and June, providing plenty of days suitable for fieldwork. Planting and emergence of all the major crops trended slightly behind the 2015 pace but well ahead of the five-year average. Hot weather, high humidity and frequent rains characterized July, August and September, boosting crop growth and keeping crops in good to excellent condition overall. However, the frequency of rains in this period disrupted hay harvest and contributed to major flooding events in Northern and Western Wisconsin. Above normal temperatures and rainy conditions continued into the fall. Though crop development trended ahead of average for all crops during the 2016 season, harvest activates in September and October trailed averages due to wet field conditions and high grain moistures. The first frost of the season struck the northern portions of the state during the week ending October 11, several weeks later than normal. The southern part of the state did not receive its first frost until the week ending November 13. The city of La Crosse broke its record for latest first frost ever recorded on November 9, compared to November 7, 1900. November brought an extended stretch of dry, clear weather and above normal temperatures, allowing farmers to catch up on harvest and tillage activities. Fall tillage was 86 percent complete as of November 27, 2 percentage points above the previous year. Statewide temperatures started off above normal with March temperatures 6.3 degrees above normal. April through September averaged 1.3 above normal in 2016, compared to 0.9 degrees above normal in 2015. April was the only month this season with below normal temperatures, averaging 1.1 degrees below normal. The remaining growing season months ranged from 0.8 above normal in May and July to 3.9 degrees above normal in September. October averaged 4.0 degrees above normal and November was 8.6 degrees above normal. Precipitation totals for April through September were above normal for much of Wisconsin but below normal in the Southeast District. The statewide total was 27.34 inches, 3.54 above the total for 2015 and 4.91 inches above normal. April and May had normal to below normal precipitation across the state, while June through September had above normal precipitation on average. September was the month with the greatest departure from normal, with 2.22 inches above normal for the state. By district, departures from normal for April through September ranged from 0.89 inches below normal in the Southeast District to 7.90 inches above normal in the Southwest District. Corn planted for all purposes totaled 4.05 million acres in 2016, up 1 percent from the previous year. There were 3.22 million acres harvested for grain, up 7 percent from 2015. Grain yield rose to 178 bushels per acre, up 14 bushels per acre from the previous year. Acres harvested for silage fell 19 percent to 790,000 acres while silage production decreased 12 percent to 16.6 million tons. 12 Wisconsin 2017 Agricultural Statistics Planted acres of soybeans increased by 80,000 acres to 1.96 million acres. Harvested acres also increased 80,000 acres to 1.95 million acres statewide. The average yield for soybeans in Wisconsin was 55.0 bushels per acre, 5.5 bushels per acre more than the previous year. Total production rose 16 percent to 107 million bushels. Wisconsin was the fourth largest oat producer in the nation in 2016 with 6.60 million bushels, a 53 percent decrease from 2015. This was due to 95,000 fewer harvested acres and a decrease in yields. Average yield was 66 bushels per acre in 2016 compared to 72 bushels per acre in 2015. There were 270,000 acres of winter wheat planted in 2016, up 40,000 acres from 2015. Acres harvested rose 40,000 acres to 250,000 acres. Yields rose 5 bushels per acre, and production increased 27 percent to 19.8 million bushels. As of May 15, 2016, winter freeze damage to alfalfa was rated 1 percent severe, 3 percent moderate and 19 percent light. There was no damage to the remaining 77 percent of alfalfa stands, up from 72 percent undamaged the previous year. Abundant heat and moisture kept alfalfa growing quickly throughout the spring and summer, though frequent rains in July, August and September interfered with baling dry hay. All four cuttings of alfalfa ran ahead of both the five-year average and the 2015 haying season, replacing 2015 as the second fastest harvest pace in the past 35 years. Cuttings were still about a week behind the record early haying season of 2012, however. Warm fall weather allowed widespread access to a fourth and even fifth crop of alfalfa, and left stands in good shape to overwinter. The season average for hay condition was 87 percent good to excellent, compared to 80 percent good to excellent for the 2015 season. Potato harvested acreage was up 2,000 acres in 2016, with 64,500 acres harvested in total. The average yield fell 10 cwt., to 435 cwt. per acre. Overall production was 28.0 million cwt., up 1 percent from the previous year. Wisconsin remained the top producer in the nation for snap beans, contributing 36 percent of the national production. The state also ranked second for total production of cabbage and third for total production of sweet corn, peas, and carrots. There were 21,100 acres of cranberries harvested in 2016, up 900 acres from the previous year. Cranberry production was 6.13 million barrels, an increase of 1,274,000 barrels from 2015, with yields averaging 288.2 barrels per acre. Wisconsin remained the top cranberry producing state, with 64 percent of the national production. Bearing apple acreage in Wisconsin was 4,000 acres, the same as the previous year. Apple production was 41.0 million pounds, down 10.5 million pounds from 2015. Tart cherry production was up 4.3 million pounds to 13.6 million pounds. Tart cherry bearing acres remained at 1,700 acres. The Census of Agriculture is a complete count of U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. Even small plots of land – whether rural or urban – growing fruits, vegetables, or raising food animals count, if $1,000 or more of such products were raised and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year. The Census of Agriculture, taken only once every five years, looks at land use and ownership, operator characteristics, production practices, income and expenditures. For America’s farmers and ranchers, the Census of Agriculture is their voice, their future, their opportunity. • Why is the Census of Agriculture important? The Census of Agriculture provides the only source of uniform, comprehensive and impartial agricultural data for every county in the nation. Through the Census of Agriculture, producers can show the nation the value and importance of agriculture, and they can help influence the decisions that will shape the future of American agriculture for years to come. By responding to the Census of Agriculture, producers are helping themselves, their communities, and all of U.S. agriculture. • Who uses Census of Agriculture data? Census of Agriculture data are used by all those who serve farmers and rural communities – federal, state and local governments, agribusinesses, trade associations, and many others. Farmers and ranchers can use Census of Agriculture data to help make informed decisions about the future of their own operations. Companies and cooperatives use the facts and figures to determine the locations of facilities that will serve agricultural producers. Community planners and local governments use the information to target needed programs and services to rural residents. Legislators use the numbers from the census when shaping farm policies and programs. • How is the Census of Agriculture conducted? The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will mail questionnaires for the 2017 Census of Agriculture to farm and ranch operators in December 2017 to collect data for the 2017 calendar year. Completed forms are due by February 5, 2018. The most convenient way to complete the census is online at www.agcensus.usda.gov. Alternately, you can return your forms by mail. • Must I respond to the Census of Agriculture? Yes. United States law (Title 7 USC 2204(g) Public Law 105113) requires all those who receive a Census of Agriculture report form to respond even if they did not operate a farm or ranch in 2017. 58 Wisconsin 2017 Agricultural Statistics • What if I only have a small operation or do not participate in government farm programs, do I have to fill out a Census of Agriculture form? The Census of Agriculture is the responsibility of every individual who produces or grows any agricultural product, including field crops, fruits, vegetables, floriculture, and livestock, regardless of the size or type of operation. For Census of Agriculture purposes, a farm is any place from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year. • What if I did not receive or I lost my Census of Agriculture form? If you have questions, need more information, or need assistance completing your Census of Agriculture form, call tollfree (888) 424-7828 or visit www.agcensus.usda.gov. • When will 2017 Census of Agriculture results be announced? NASS plans to release Census of Agriculture data, in both electronic and print formats, beginning in February 2019. Detailed reports will be published for all counties, states and the nation. • Where can I find Census of Agriculture data?
