Dear Parents and Guardians:
I am writing to let you know about an incident that occurred at our school this morning and to ask
you to discuss the matter with your child.
At about 9:20 this morning, one of our fourth-grade students looked in her desk and saw a snake.
The student did not reach into the desk, but instead alerted the teacher. The teacher immediately
evacuated the classroom and alerted our administration.
Our custodian and a school volunteer went to the room and retrieved the snake. It was disposed of
over the back fence and into the woods behind our school. We believe the snake was a
nonpoisonous black snake.
We spoke to all the students in the class and none appeared to show any signs of trauma from the
event. Students returned to the classroom after the snake was removed and instruction continued
normally for the rest of the day.
