Dear Stuyvesant Community,

Welcome back to the 2018-2019 school year. It was wonderful to see our students return to
school this week. I saw them engage diligently in classrooms, connect with friends and staff, and
share their stories from the summer. This time of the year is always ?lled with excitement and
possibility, and I am grateful to share opening week with the students and staff of Stuyvesant
High School. It felt very much like being home, standing at the door and watching our beautiful
family return.

I would like to share that after much deliberation and feedback from our community, I have
made a decision to stay as principal of Stuyvesant High School. Over the past two weeks many
of you have reached out in person, phone and email to express your gratitude for our shared
work. I was touched by your messages and thankful to be part of our vibrant learning
community. The work at Stuyvesant for students, staff and leadership is never easy; it is,
however, always richly rewarding.

This is a deeply personal decision and mine alone, based on my desire to stay close to the work
with staff, students and families at Stuyvesant. I thank the New York City Department of
Education for respecting my personal decision and value our shared commitment to equity and
excellence in our schools.

I look forward to our continued work inside and outside the classrooms, to more days of
watching in awe as our students blossom in the arts, academics, athletics, and all the rich
experiences that fill our days with learning, challenge and joy. I hope to celebrate more years of
building our programs, including those in process in engineering, robotics, arts and
sustainability. I look eagerly to our work ahead, and more importantly to the future possibilities,
hopes and yet unfulfilled dreams of our students.
