Christopher Cook 817.459.5333 CRITICAL INCIDENT OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING On Saturday, September 1, 2018 around 1:45 pm. an officer with the Arlington Police Department initiated a traffic stop in the 2400 block of California Lane for a registration violation on an SUV. An additional officer arrived on scene a few minutes later and the investigation shifted to a broader investigation based upon officers smelling the odor of marijuana. As the ?rst officer went back to the patrol car to conduct standard computerized checks, the back-up officer stood near the front passenger door of the SUV. The back-up officer requested the driver to turn the vehicle off and to roll the windows down fully. The SUV was occupied by two men in their mid?20's. The driver of the SUV initially complied with the request and the officer continued to have verbal dialogue with the two individuals inside the SUV. Approximately ten minutes into the encounter, the driver without warning, began to roll both windows up and start the vehicle. The officer reached inside the passenger window with his left arm and began to give verbal commands as the window continued rolling up. The driver began to drive forward with the of?cer on the passenger side of the SUV. The of?cer withdrew a firearm and discharged it striking the driver as the vehicle continued in motion and driving down the street. The officer then became separated from the SUV and landed on the pavement of the road as the SUV continued driving eastbound on California Lane. The initial officer began to check the welfare of the officer who was on the roadway and radio responding units with pertinent information related to what was happening and the last known direction of travel of the SUV. Additional responding units quickly located the SUV in 2200 block of California Lane. Officers saw that the driver was in need of medical attention and began administering first aid until emergency medical services arrived. The driver was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The passenger inside the SUV was detained but later released pending further investigation.
