Delafield Harnessing Big Data: Artificial Intelligence for Precision Cancer Care WHAT IF WE COULD USE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO IMPROVE CANCER DIAGNOSIS FOR PEOPLE WORLDWIDE? Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s expert scientists can use AI to synthesize vast amounts of anonymous data, collected over decades of caring for our patients, better predicting how people with cancer will respond to treatment. We hope to dramatically accelerate the translation of MSK’s unique information to make precise diagnoses. Using artificial intelligence, researchers can analyze large amounts of data for automated and enhanced decisionmaking, as well as prediction and pattern recognition, thus tackling the fundamental questions in oncology that plague patients, doctors, and researchers. MSK sits at the center of genetic testing and pathology, providing patients with personalized care. These tests help doctors identify whether a person has cancer, what type of cancer it is, and where it is located. This data can be systematically and anonymously digitized, making all patients’ information suitable for AI analysis. MSK’s Computational Oncology Service, led by Chief Sohrab Shah, will integrate and leverage this data to change the standard of care, giving doctors and patients an otherwise unobtainable wealth of information that they can use to determine the best treatment. This groundbreaking program will affect the way millions of patients are treated in the future. We will stimulate research at the nexus of computer science and oncology to solve cancer’s most compelling problems. HOW WILL YOUR SUPPORT HELP? Your support will allow us to seek experts from the highly competitive world of technology to lead MSK in a new direction. These new faculty members will expand our research, train the next generation of computational scientists, and enable us to share our discoveries with ever-growing research communities. By attracting the best and the brightest computer technology leaders, MSK can create the program our clinicians need to provide patients with the most specific, targeted cancer care. The Campaign will fund new technologies, which will power our research efforts, providing us with virtually unlimited computing power and data storage. This technology can produce visualizations that can be shared not only within MSK but also across the international research community, transforming the way research is conducted and affecting people with cancer throughout the world. By harnessing years of multifaceted data, we can leverage that information to make more accurate diagnoses and to save lives.
