We just read the article in The Times-Picayune with the latest New Orleans Tourism Data from UNO's HRC. Congratulations. Your research looks great as always. The article states that UNO HRC compiled this data independently from the NOCVB and NOTMC. We're wondering if the ANP can now hire UNO HRC to use this 2017 data to update the 2013 Short-Term Rental Visitor Survey Results and Economic Impact Analysis that you developed for us back in 2014? Ideally this updated report would also show the change in key measures from 2013 to 2017. We believe the number of visitors to New Orleans staying in Short-Term Rentals has grown substantially between 2013 and 2017. As you will recall we last spoke about updating this study in June of 2016. At that time, you informed us that UNO HRC was unable to move forward with an update because the NOCVB and NOTMC "owned" the 2015 data and refused to release the data for a Short-Term Rental update. It is our hope that UNO HRC "owns" the 2017 data and is open to releasing it for an update of the Short-Term Rental Visitor Survey Results and Economic Impact Analysis. As always, the ANP is happy to pay UNO HRC to develop such an update to the Short-Term Rental study. Please let us know UNO HRC's thoughts on this as soon as possible. We have a second question. This is regarding the 2017 data published in The Times-Picayune yesterday. Specifically the slide called "Where Visitors Stay". In this pie chart, "Other" represents 11.8% of all stays. Can you tell us what constitutes the "Other" category? Is "Other" just Short-Term Rentals? Are Bed & Breakfasts and Boarding Houses included in "Other" or are they included in "Hotel"? Are there any other types of accommodation that are included in "Other"? I've attached a copy of the slide in question. Any clarification you can provide would be most appreciated. Yes, we are ready to move forward. Yes, the growth between 2013 and 2017 is fine. We understand that we won't have data for 2014, 2015 or 2016. Yes, please prepare a letter of agreement with the costs. Eric and I look forward to working with you and your team. Thanks again for the great news. In addition to updating the analysis from 2013, can we also include data that shows the size of the STR industry in New Orleans compared to Hotels and other Accommodations? And how that has changed between 2013 and 2017. Perhaps this would be a pie chart like the one I sent in my earlier email today for both 2013 and 2017. Wedges of the pie would include: Hotels Friends & Family STRs B&Bs Other If possible, we'd like to show a break-down by Accommodation Type across multiple measures, i.e., # of Visitors, Tax Revenue Generated, # of Jobs Created, etc. Our goal is to show the importance of STRs to the New Orleans Economy relative to other types of Accommodations like Hotels, B&B's etc. And how that has changed between 2013 and 2017. You know the data better than we do, so we defer to you on how you think the analysis should be best structured to reveal this kind of information. Feel free to include this in the letter you are preparing. Or if you would prefer to discuss first via eMail or phone, that's fine, too. Let us know your thoughts. Any time. We can work around your calendar. Also, the key measures we are most interested in are for 2017 and they are the Economic Impact measures. Specifically as follows: - In 2017, approximately TBD visitors to the New Orleans area stayed in short-term rentals. - These visitors made a substantial contribution to the New Orleans metro area economy. - They generated a total economic impact of $TBD million, comprised of $TBD million in direct spending and $TBD million in secondary spending. - Visitor spending also resulted in the creation or support of nearly TBD full-and part-time jobs. - These jobs are expected to create a total of $TBD million in additional earnings for residents of the New Orleans area. - Visitor spending is also estimated to generate a total of $TBD million in tax revenue for state and local governments. - Of that total, roughly $TBD million will go to the State of Louisiana, and $TBD million will be claimed by local governments in the New Orleans area. Additionally, we would like to be able to compare the size of the short-term rental market to size of the the Hotels, Friends & Family, & B&B segments of the market. We look to your reco on the measure or measures that would best do that. If all of the above measures are readily available by market segment for 2017 (STRs, Hotels, Friends & Family, B&B, Other) we'd love to see them. However, If it will take a long time to generate all of these measures by market segment then we'd be happy to first receive just one measure by market segment that tells an impressive story. # Visitors? Total Economic Impact? We look to your reco on which measure would be the quickest to generate and tell an impressive story. If possible, it would be great to deliver the above measures to us before the entire study is prepared and delivered. And we can wait on the growth comparison measure versus 2013, too. 9 Let me know if this is clear and if you have any questions. "This new report demonstrates the irreplaceable economic opportunity that short-term rentals provide in New Orleans," said Eric Bay, president of the Alliance for Neighborhood Prosperity (ANP), for whom the report was prepared. "Local vacation rental owners are deeply invested in their homes and in their community. At the same time, New Orleans' residents across the city have seen the economic benefits as vacation rentals now support over 10,000 jobs across sectors." Traditional vacation rentals have become an important component of the New Orleans economy. In fact, the newly released data shows short-term rentals generated nearly $900 million in total local economic activity in the city during 2017. Key findings from the report are highlighted below:     Approximately 595,000 visitors stayed in short-term rentals Short-term rental visitors generated $899.2 million in total local economic activity This visitor spending supported nearly 10,200 full- and part-time jobs These jobs created a total of $263.1 million in additional earnings for New Orleans residents 35  Short-term rental visitor spending is expected to generate $63.9 million in tax revenue for state and local governments, with $24.9 million going to local governments in the New Orleans area "We hope the City Council, the Mayor’s office, and the community will take a look at this data and understand why it's critical that we bring all stakeholders to the table to craft fair and effective policies for traditional vacation rentals. Our jobs and community are at stake, and it's time we take steps forward together to preserve our historic city and the role vacation rentals play in that history,” concluded Bay.
