Dear Prince Harry, I would like to thank you for putting together the Invictus Games, it has made a huge difference to our lives. My husband, Garry was wounded in a Blackhawk Crash in Afghanistan in 2010. He was lucky to survive, others weren’t so lucky. Garry suffered many injuries that saw him in hospital for 2 years. He has suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and many broken bones. A year after the accident he lost is leg, because it just wouldn’t heal and he was missing a big chunk of bone in it. Garry was a keen sportsman before his accident. He was struggling with many issues due to the brain injury and the frustration to do with his mobility. The Invictus Games came about at just the right time, Garry competed in Cycling, Swimming and Cycling. The Invictus Games gave him a purpose to get up everyday, he was keen to train for his events, and the exercise made him happier. He got a silver medal in the swimming event, the one event that he felt very self-conscious about doing, and was almost going to pull out of it. He is now glad that he didn’t. But it was the cycling that he strived for after the event. Garry rode a recumbent bike and was in the event that the three British competitors crossed the line together. He loved the feeling of competing again. Once he returned we contacted Cycling Australia to find out how he can become involved in cycling here. He started training and just recently competed in our National Championship Road Race and Time Trial events and became the National Champion for the category of T1. This wouldn’t have happened if he did not experience the Invictus Games. So, thank you. We were lucky enough to travel with our children to the Invictus Games. All the inspiring athletes also impacted them in a positive way. We were all very excited by the opportunities to meet special people like you. This family photos is up with pride in our house. So thank you for making an impact on our lives. Kind Regards Katrina Robinson
