Statement from Senate President Pro Tempore Marc R. Pacheco (D-Taunton): “I’m very proud of the national and international work I have done exploring new policy approaches and economic opportunities that benefit the Commonwealth. But I want to be clear: no tax dollars or corporate funds have been used to cover travel expenses. Expenses are paid either by me, personally; campaign funds, where appropriate; or sponsors that are legitimate public policy organizations. These groups – such as the Council of State Governments, the National Conference of State Legislatures, the President’s Forum, and others - are internationally-recognized bipartisan institutions that host educational discussions on policy. The State of Massachusetts is a member of many of these organizations and I attend their meetings and conferences on behalf of the Commonwealth. I have identified all relevant sponsors, requested all relevant information, and filed all appropriate disclosure forms based on the information provided. Strengthening the Commonwealth’s status in the world economy has been an important state priority for decades. During that time, I have been an outspoken advocate for the benefits of global outreach. International collaboration promotes Massachusetts as an attractive choice for investment and expansion, creating partnerships that bring millions of dollars to our state and local communities. These interactions also provide a first-hand look at innovative approaches that - as the Globe contends in “Lessons from the Seoul Subway for Boston’s transit woes” - often merit genuine consideration here in the Commonwealth. I have always made a sincere attempt to promote this work – not just because I value transparency, but also because I think it’s important and I’m proud of it. It does not compete for my attention towards my primary responsibilities and I deliberately schedule travel on weekends and holidays whenever possible. As a result, my overall voting record has consistently been amongst the highest in the legislature throughout my legislative career. I have always sought to satisfy disclosure standards and I will continue to do so.”
