October 29, 2018 Dear Parents and Guardians: I am writing to share with you information about an incident we have been investigating since it came to our attention on Friday afternoon. Shortly before dismissal on Friday, staff in our Counseling Office was made aware of a message written on a sheet that students use to sign in and out for appointments with school counselors. The message says, “Kill All Blacks,” along with a fourth word that has been scribbled out. Our staff has been interviewing students who signed the sheet as well as others since Friday and is exploring other avenues that we hope will lead us to the identification of the person or persons who wrote the message. I want to assure you that we will take appropriate disciplinary action with regard anyone that is identified as having anything to do with this entirely unacceptable act. I also want to assure you that we will do everything we can to help ensure that every student feels safe while at Chesapeake High School. Our school year has, thus far, been marked largely by a climate of acceptance. The work we undertook from the first day to build relationships and our initiatives like our school’s participation in the National Bullying Prevention Center’s Unity Day last week have helped to infuse the message of kindness and inclusion. However, incidents such as the one we discovered Friday afternoon – especially given the nature of horrific incidents of hate around the nation and world – threaten to undo all of that effort. We must not tolerate any form of bigotry or hate, no matter the race and ethnicity of the suspect or those of the intended victim or victims. It should not matter to us whether those races and ethnicities are different or identical. Hate is hate, and we must eradicate it from our school. County police were involved in this matter on Friday and we, along with police, are continuing to investigate this matter. As I did several times last year, I urge you to have serious conversations with your child about the unacceptable nature of these types of actions. We need you to be a part of this solution. If the conversations you have with your child provide any information that would be helpful in our investigation, please call the school or police. You can also call our Student Safety Hotline at 1-877-6769854 with any safety matter 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Sincerely, Stephen Gorski Principal SC/bm
