The U.S. Bureau of Land Management provided the Center for Public Integrity the following statement for this article: The BLM is committed to sustainably developing our Nation's energy and natural resources. Through balanced management, the BLM develops resources while maintaining healthy ecosystems, ensuring access for recreational opportunities, and preserving cultural resources and iconic landscapes. In New Mexico, the BLM manages 13.5 million acres of surface acres and 42 million acres of subsurface mineral estate. In Fiscal Year 2017, the diverse activities authorized on BLM New Mexico managed lands generated $14.9 billion in economic output and supported more than 78,000 jobs. This economic activity contributed substantial revenue to to the State, mostly through the royalties on minerals.
