Bronte OfCozmsel pbronteafajs?tdxom To: Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the United Arab Emirates Al Bateen, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street Abu Dhabi The United Arab Emirates 12 February 2018 Your Excellency, Following on our letter of 2 August 2017 and subsequent communication with your Ministry and the UAE embassy in Washington DC, we are writing to you again to urgently request a meeting with an appropriate official with whom we can discuss the United Arab Emirate?s resettlement programme. We are group of US Lawyers representing former Guantanamo detainees who have been resettled by your government, and after more than a year in which we have been unable to contact our clients, we are increasingly concerned for their well- being. The men whom we represent were held without charge or trial for up to 14 years at Guantanamo Bay. They have each been cleared for release through stringent review processes requiring a decision among the top security agencies. We believe that they are ready and willing to safely rebuild their lives in the UAE, and call on your government to allow them to do so. This would complete the vital humanitarian action the UAE undertook in originally accepting the men. We hope to work with the UAE authorities towards our shared goal: ensuring that our clients are safely resettled and able to rebuild their lives in their new home. l-lowever, until now, we have been thwarted in all our attempts to contact the relevant of?cials reSponsible for the resettlement programme. Concurrently, we have been denied access to our clients and information as to their location and conditions. Accordingly, we respectfully resubmit the following requests: 0 Allow for increased family communication and visits 0 Allow access to the 0 Provide us and our clients with a timeframe for their transition to independent living as well as clarity on the rights they will have and the support they can expect to receive to rebuild their lives 0 Allow us to speak with our clients directly We are calling for a meeting or phone call with the appropriate of?cial from your government to discuss these requests. Stowell 84 Friedman, Ltd. February .2, 2013 Page 2 of 2 Attorneys at Law Our previous meeting requests have either been met with silence or with contradictory instructions. The LIAE Embassy in Washington wrote to one of our group on 9 February 20l7 stating that, ?Matters related to persons in Mr. Mohammed?s situation [Mr. Mohammed is among the former Guantanamo detainees transferred to have been handled by the authorities in Abu Dhabi. I suggest you take your inquiry to them.? When on I 1 January 2018 we ?nally managed to speak to an of?cial at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abu Dhabi, Mr. Suhail Al-Mullah, we were told that we must channel our request through the UAE Embassy. Our aim is to constructively engage with the government of the UAE on this matter. However, our inability to speak with the relevant of?cials after a year of trying has caused us great concern that this approach may not be viable. We therefore ask that you respond to this by 12 March 2018. Sincerely, Patricia A. Bronte, Stowell Friedman, Ltd. David Remes, Appeal for Justice Anne Richardson, Public Counsel Peter M.
