l7 PURSUITS The responsibility for initiating a pursuit rests with the individual deputy, however the deputy and or the supervising deputy may at any time cancel the pursuit. Just because a pursuit can be justi?ed does not eliminate the individual deputy, supervisor or agency from civil and or criminal penalties. Pursuits shall be for a violent felony offense, or use of force likely to cause death or serious physical injury, or threatened use of such force. A charge of Wanton Endangerment arising from the pursuit shall not be cause for continuing pursuit. Once the decision is made to initiate a pursuit the following rules apply: 1. 2. 3. 4. The deputy shall notify Meade County Control and the appropriate supervisor or senior deputy, Engage and maintain operation of siren and blue lights. Ensure that seat belt and shoulder straps are properly fastened. Inform Meade County Control of the direction of travel, number of. occupants, any description of vehicle, to include license data, occupants and speed. No more than two deputies and vehicles shall be involved in the actual pursuit and they shall maintain control of their vehicles at all times. The deputy engaged in a pursuit shall not fire at, ram, or otherwise attempt to forcibly stop the pursued vehicle unless the deputy reasonably believes that the continued movement of the pursued vehicle would place others in immediate danger of death or serious injury. 18 TERMINATION 0F PURSUIT Pursuit shall be terminated whenever any of the following occur: 1. The offender?s general location becomes unknown. 2. The deputy has a passenger in his vehicle other than a sworn police of?cer. 3. The pursuit enters an area where potential danger could occur. 4 The pursuit leaves the jurisdiction of Meade County and another agency of competent jurisdiction takes over the pursuit. 5. A supervisor or a person acting as a supervisor gives orders to terminate the pursuit, whether on duty or off. 6. The deputy knows the person driving the vehicle, or is in possession of information that would allow him to secure a warrant for the persons arrest at a later date. 7. The deputy reasonably believes the danger created by continuing the pursuit outweighs the need for immediate apprehension. Deputies should remember that a vehicle used in a pursuit may be considered a deadly weapon and only used in such cases as justi?ed use of deadly force may be used. PURSUIT OTHER AGENCY Sheriff?s deputies participating in a pursuit initiated by other agencies shall be restricted to a support capacity. ROADBLOCKS Will only be used with supervisor approval. STOP STICKS Stop sticks, when preperly used have the potential to save police of?cers and innocent citizen lives, and many dollars in property damage, as well as reducing the potential for liability suits. Step sticks are only to be used on motor vehicles, cars, trucks etc. They are not to be used on ATVs, etc. The only stop sticks authorized for use by departmental personnel are those furnished by this of?ce. Deputies of the Meade County Sheriff's Of?ce shall not use stop sticks unless properly trained and certi?ed in their use. If stop sticks are utilized in a pursuit, a Pursuit Reporting Form shall be completed and forwarded through the chain of command. TRAFFIC STOPS Stopping violators in private drives and business locations with limited parking should be avoided, unless the situation dictates otherwise. To effect a traf?c stop, the deputy shall use his emergency lighting and when necessary his siren. Other safety lights such as takedown, alley or spotlights may be utilized considering the time of day and location of the stop.
