On November 16, 2018, Vanderbilt University Medical Center (“VUMC”) received a finding of
immediate jeopardy from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (“CMS”). The CMS finding is based
on a survey by the Tennessee Department of Health (“TDH”) of an unanticipated death of a patient due to an
inpatient medication administration error.
VUMC thoroughly responded to the CMS statement of deficiencies and submitted a robust plan of
correction, which has been accepted by CMS and TDH. A follow-up survey will take place before December 9,
2018 to validate that the deficiencies constituting immediate jeopardy have been corrected. Failure to resolve
the deficiencies would result in involuntary termination of VUMC’s Medicare provider agreement.
VUMC will continue to work closely with representatives of CMS and TDH to assure that any
remaining concerns are fully resolved. VUMC is confident that this matter will be successfully resolved.
This notice is provided by VUMC voluntarily, and no inference should be drawn that VUMC will
provide notice of similar or other events in the future.
