1/06/13 Chair Mason and Commissioners, Over the past 35 plus years I have invested thousands of volunteer hours on multiple boards and community organizations. If I had to make a list I doubt I would recall them all. In all of that time, I don't believe I have ever appeared before the Board of County Commissioners in my own behalf and I do not propose to do so now despite the apparent willingness to forego due process and the rush to judgment by some in our community. Questions have been raised by a few individuals as to whether I should continue my service on two county boards: the Tourist Development Council; and the Board of Zoning Appeals. It has always been my intention that when my term on the Airport Authority expires, upon the appointment by the Governor of the new Board, to concurrently resign from the TDC as that appointment was initially predicated on my involvement with the airport as a representative of the tourism industry The Board of Zoning Appeals is actually my favorite of all the county boards I have served on over the years as it is a board that is in a position to make final determinations in helping folks resolve problems with the utilization of their property. I enjoyed the process and I enjoyed serving with dedicated board members who understood their responsibilities and appreciated their unique position among county boards. But the reality is, due to the stellar performance of Zoning Department staff, over the past two years most issues have been resolved prior to their ever reaching the BZA's level. We had occasion to meet only twice last year and are not scheduled for any meetings until, at the earliest, March of this year, if then. That in itself is quite a testament to Brad Bailey and his Department. Given the preceding, and the fact I have too much respect for this board and each of you to place you in the uncomfortable position of having to discuss whether you have the option or inclination of removing me from these positions, ... I hereby tender to you my resignations from both the Tourist Development Council and the Board of Zoning Appeals effective immediately. I thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve.
