Muhlenberg College Anti-Hazing Policy 5 Year Institutional Report January 14, 2019 Date of Report: September 10, 2014 Name of the Subject of the Report: Delta Zeta Date Charged: Unfounded General description of the violation, any investigation and findings by the institution and, if applicable, penalties: An anonymous caller left a message on the Director of Greek Life’s phone stating the following: “Potential hazing tonight at Delta Zeta.” This was investigated, and, upon completion, no evidence was found to support the claim of hazing. The date on which the matter was resolved: September 15, 2014 ****************************************************************************** Date of Report: March 17, 2015 Name of the Subject of the Report: Delta Zeta Date Charged: June 19, 2015 General description of the violation, any investigation and findings by the institution and, if applicable, penalties: The Director of Greek Life received an anonymous complaint via email re possible hazing that took place during the 2015 Spring Semester. Upon completion of the investigation, Delta Zeta was charged with the following: Failing to report changes to the Director of Greek Affairs regarding the Delta Zeta New Member Education plan during the 2015 Spring Semester; Failing to report incident of hazing to appropriate College officials during the 2015 Spring Semester; and using a suggestion box in an intimidating manner, causing anxiety and/or distress to new members during the 2015 Spring Semester. The president of the fraternity accepted responsibility for all charges, and the following sanction was imposed: Other Educational Task – Completion of all recommended national sanctions. Delta Zeta was also found guilty by their national headquarters and received a list of sanctions, which they are currently working through. Delta Zeta is also completing mandated educational programming and is required to register events with their headquarters. The fraternity have also had visits by national headquarters personnel throughout the semester. The date on which the matter was resolved: December 2015 ****************************************************************************** Date of Report: April 13, 2015 Name of the Subject of the Report: Alpha Chi Omega Date Charged: June 19, 2015 General description of the violation, any investigation and findings by the institution and, if applicable, penalties: An anonymous letter to the College President stated that new member hazing took place during the 2014 Fall Semester. Upon completion of the investigation, Alpha Chi Omega was charged with the following: Failing to report changes to the Director of Greek Affairs regarding the Alpha Chi Omega New Member Education plan during the 2014 Fall Semester; Failing to report incident of hazing to appropriate College officials during the 2014 Fall Semester; and Holding various activities that caused anxiety and/or distress to new member(s) during the 2014 Fall Semester. The president of the fraternity accepted responsibility of all charges, and the following sanctions were imposed: Other Educational Task – Completion of all recommended national sanctions (Sustain a safe and healthy environment that is in line with Alpha Chi Omega risk management policies and FIPG guidelines; sustain a new-member education program that is aligned with Alpha Chi Omega policies and best practices; and sustain chapter accountability, leadership development and personal accountability within the executive board and membership through CRSB) and a Disciplinary Warning for the 2015/2016 Academic Year. Alpha Chi Omega is currently working through the sanctions imposed by their National Headquarters. Alpha Chi Omega is also completing mandated educational programming and is required to register events with the headquarters. The date on which the matter was resolved: December 2015 ****************************************************************************** Date of Report: April 15, 2015 Name of the Subject of the Report: Kappa Kappa Psi (KKP) Date Charged: Unfounded as hazing General description of the violation, any investigation and findings by the institution and, if applicable, penalties: A third party reported that Kappa Kappa Psi engaged in hazing. A report included a conversation with the alleged victim and concluded that the third-party information was unfounded. Upon completion of the investigation, it was decided that a meeting take place with officers, advisor and national representative to discuss the findings. It was decided that additional support for the 2015/2016 Academic Year was needed, therefore the chapter completed the following goals: Sustain a new member education program that is aligned with KKP and Muhlenberg College policies & best practices ;and to sustain chapter accountability, leadership development and personal accountability within the executive board and membership. The date on which the matter was resolved: October 29, 2015. ****************************************************************************** Date of Report: October 16, 2015 Name of the Subject of the Report: Alpha Chi Omega Date Charged: Unfounded General description of the violation, any investigation and findings by the institution and, if applicable, penalties: Campus Safety investigated an anonymous report of possible hazing at Alpha Chi Omega. Twenty-three new members were interviewed, and all 23 members stated that everything they do is optional and they are not obligated or threatened to give rides and can always say no. The president and new member educator of the fraternity were also interviewed. After full review of the Campus Safety Report and a conversation with the Director of Student Leadership Programs, it was determined that there was insufficient evidence that hazing took place. The date on which the matter was resolved: November 23, 2015 ****************************************************************************** Date of Report: December 1, 2015 Name of the Subject of the Report: Delta Tau Delta Date Charged: Unfounded General description of the violation, any investigation and findings by the institution and, if applicable, penalties: An anonymous complaint, via a non-Muhlenberg email account, was investigated and, upon completion, no evidence was found to support the claim of hazing. The date on which the matter was resolved: December 14, 2015 ****************************************************************************** Date of Report: October 19, 2017 Name of the Subject of the Report: Phi Sigma Sigma (PSS) Date Charged: Unfounded as hazing General description of the violation, any investigation and findings by the institution and, if applicable, penalties: Associate Director of Student Engagement for Clubs and Organizations received information about possible hazing that members of Phi Sigma Sigma were encouraging new members to consume alcohol. Even though hazing charges were not founded, Phi Sigma Sigma was charged with the following: 2.5 Other Offenses - Alcohol Policy (Consumption/Possession): Provided (i.e. gifted) alcohol to underage students at a Phi Sigma Sigma event (i.e. Big/Little Reveal Ceremony) and Underage consumption of alcohol at a Phi Sigma Sigma event (i.e. Big/Little Reveal Ceremony). Chapter President accepted responsibility of all charges and sanctions. Sanctions imposed: Disciplinary Warning and Restorative Circle. The date on which the matter was resolved: February 26, 2018 ****************************************************************************** Date of Report: November 7, 2017 Name of the Subject of the Report: Sigma Phi Epsilon Date Charged: November 30, 2017 General description of the violation, any investigation and findings by the institution and, if applicable, penalties: The Associate Dean of Students received a phone call from an anonymous caller reporting physical and mental hazing during the new member period at the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity house. All new members and current members were interviewed. Through the investigation, it was found that hazing did take place and Sigma Phi Epsilon was charged with the following: Section #2.la Offenses Against Persons (Harassment), Section #2.lb Offenses Against Persons (Physical Abuse and/or Assault), Section #2.3b. Offenses Against the Community (Disorderly Conduct), Section #2.4a. Offenses Against the Judicial System, and Section #2.5 Other Offenses (Anti-Hazing Policy). Sanctions imposed: Disciplinary Dissolution - 4 Years. The Chapter was required to release all new members selected in the fall of 2017 from their obligations of membership effective immediately.
