Title Going Down the Rabbit Hole with Google Tools Description Sure you know all about the amazing tools that Google Apps for Education has to offer such as Docs, Sheets, Forms, and Slides. You might even be using Classroom. But there are an incredible number of other resources that Google has to offer educators. In this session, we’ll look at some of those tools as well as some Google search tips and tricks that can really up your Google game and take it to the next level. My Maps Google’s My Maps tool allows you to build custom drives, trips and routes on its Maps product. It is now integrated directly into Google Drive, which means you can build custom maps just as easily as you can new documents, slideshows and spreadsheets. Example: Jeff’s GAFE Adventures Example: MSS Global Connections Google Earth Google Earth has relaunched with a number of new features: ⊡ Web-based (so it works on Chromebooks, yay!) ⊡ 3D rendering ⊡ Voyages ⊡ Knowledge cards ⊡ Use “Peg-Man” to zoom into Street View ⊡ “I’m Feeling Lucky” Google Tour Builder Google Tour Builder allows you to create custom tours using Google Earth. It lets you pick the locations right on the map, add in photos, text, and video, and then share your creation. Originally created as a tool for war veterans, it is a great resource for students. Neat example: Highfill BBQ Road Trip Google Lit Trips Google Lit Trips are free downloadable files that mark the journeys of characters from famous literature on the surface of Google Earth. At each location along the journey there are placemarks with pop-up windows containing a variety of resources including relevant media, thought provoking discussion starters, and links to supplementary information. Use it on Chromebooks now! Google Lit Trips started off as a GCT project! Google Arts & Culture Google Arts & Culture allows you to discover exhibits and collections from museums and archives all around the world. Explore cultural treasures in extraordinary detail, from hidden gems to masterpieces. Create your own galleries and share favorite finds with friends. Explore Art Projects, Histori c Moments and World Wonders Performing Arts The Google Cultural Institute now includes a Performing Arts section which includes 360 video performances in Music, Opera, Theater, Dance, and Performance Art. Give students the chance to see professional artists perfect their craft in some of the world’s most famous venues! Google Cardboard Google Cardboard brings immersive experiences to everyone in a simple and affordable way. Whether you fold your own or buy a “Works with Google Cardboard” certified viewer, you're just one step away from experiencing virtual reality on your smartphone. For starters, you can view YouTube #360Video videos as well as use the Cardboard and Google Street View apps. Google Expeditions Google Expeditions is a new implementation of Google Cardboard which allows teachers to take their entire class on immersive virtual reality field trips using multiple cardboard headsets and smartphones. GeoGuesser is a web-based geographic discovery game which utilizes random Google Street View locations and requires players to guess the location in the world using only the clues visible in Street View. GeoSettr allows you to create your own GeoGuesser challenges and provides you with a custom URL to access them. Smarty Pins! To encourage more people to interact with Google Maps, we created Smarty Pins, a fun and interactive game that tests players' trivia and geography knowledge. Choose a category, start a game, and keep playing until you run out of miles! Street View Treks Google Street View Treks let you travel to and explore some of the most famous sites from around the globe without leaving your classroom. There’s even a form available for you to become a “Trekker” and borrow equipment from Google to capture images. Also be sure to check out the Google Oceans collection! GoogleTreks GoogleTreks™ allow teachers and students to use Google Maps to synthesize information in one easy-to-use map that places text, pictures, audio files, video files, and much more in one central location. There are units available for primary through higher ed in a variety of subjects. The site also includes rubrics and howtos for creating your own. One Today One Today helps introduce users to interesting nonprofits. Every day it will share a new one with you and if you like what you see, you can use the app to donate a dollar. There’s a social component that will let you see where your friends are giving, and match their donations if you so choose. 2 Let Them Create! These Google tools let students get hands-on to make and create truly awesome and imaginative things! Camp Google Camp Google is a free summer camp that gets kids learning through fun, interactive science activities and adventures. Led by experts, the activities have been designed to encourage kids to ask questions, setting them on a lifelong journey of exploration and discovery. Google CS Summer Institute Google's Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI) is a three-week introduction to computer science for graduating high school seniors with a passion for technology — especially students from historically underrepresented groups in the field. CSSI is not your average summer camp. It's an intensive, interactive, hands-on and fun program that seeks to inspire the tech leaders and innovators of tomorrow. Made With Code Made with Code is Google’s initiative (in partnership with several organizations including Code.org) to inspire girls to learn and make with code. The site includes numerous projects and opportunities to connect with women in various industries who use code in their careers. Projects are based on Blockly, a web-based, graphical programming editor from Google CS First CS First is a free program that increases student access and exposure to computer science (CS) education through afterschool, in-school, and summer programs. All clubs are run by teachers and/or community volunteers. Materials are completely free and available online and targeted at students in grades 4th-8th (ages 9-14). Project Bloks Project Bloks is a research project. Google’s aim is to create an open hardware platform to help developers, designers, and researchers build the next generation of tangible programming experiences for kids. By removing the technical barriers that get in the way, kids can focus on innovating, experimenting, and creating new ways to learn computational thinking. Sign up for more info on Project Bloks! Story Builder Google Story Builder is a fun tool for making short videos that appear to be a Google Doc with multiple editors. When you create one, you choose your characters and then add the text they type, (or modify) as they take turns editing the document. Some excellent uses for allowing students to create and tell stories in the classroom. Google Science Fair The Google Science Fair is a global online science and technology competition open to individuals and teams from ages 13 to 18. Partner organizations include Lego, Virgin Galactic, National Geographic, and Scientific American. Students must formulate a hypothesis, perform an experiment, and present their results. SketchUp SketchUp (formerly Google SketchUp) is a 3D modeling computer program designed for a wide range of drawing applications. It was built to be fun to use, so don’t be surprised to find a room full of kids having a blast bringing their ideas to life in 3D. 3D Warehouse contains tons of additional models to use within SketchUp. There is a K-12 Grant Program for the Pro version! Google Doodle Doodle 4 Google is an annual competition held by Google designed to have children create a logo that will be featured on the Google homepage. Entries from all students in U.S. schools from K-12 are accepted (via teacher submission). Prizes include the winner’s doodle appearing on the Google homepage, a $30,000 scholarship, a t-shirt with their doodle on it, a Chromebook, a Wacom tablet, and a $5000 tech grant for their school. The next competition starts in September! Peanut Gallery The Peanut Gallery is a Chrome Experiment that lets you add intertitles to old film clips using your voice, then share those clips with your friends. It uses your computer’s microphone and the Web Speech API in Google Chrome to turn speech into text. Try it out! Legos, Legos, Legos! Build with Chrome gives students access to the largest Lego set ever! Students can build use Chrome on phones, laptops, desktops, and tablets to create. They can publish their work once they are done. There is also a Build Academy where students can train to become a Master Builder and take challenges. JAM with Chrome JAM with Chrome is an interactive web application that allows friends in different locations to play music together in real time through their Chrome browser, using the latest HTML5 technologies. You can choose from one of 19 instruments and up to 4 people can JAM together in a session. Inside Abbey Road Inside Abbey Road makes it possible for anyone around the world to step inside the iconic Abbey Road Studios the spiritual home of British Music and follow in the footsteps of musical legends. Explore the rooms, discover stories, historic images and videos, and play with innovative Abbey Road equipment. 3 OTHERS These Google tools let students get hands-on to make and create truly awesome and imaginative things! Chrome Experiments Chrome Experiments is an online showroom of web browser based experiments, interactive programs, and artistic projects designed to showcase the work of creative coders and to demonstrate interesting JavaScript hacks running in Chrome. A great resource to inspire students. Chrome Cube La b Lightsaber Escape Roll It Google Trends Google Trends is a great tool to have students find information about trending topics in the news. Kleerup 5 3mm Belgxe Sp. oan Malenb Google NYC Offices, November 2015 Solve for X Solve for X is a think tank project launched by Google to incite collaboration to solve global issues, "X" representing a remedy. “We are a community of scientists, inventors, engineers, artists, thinkers, doers, the young, the wise, men and women from every background across every geography connected by a shared optimism that science and technology can cause radically positive things to happen in the world.” The Constitute Project Constitute was the result of a Google Ideas project to see how technology can continue to support and improve constitution design. Users can browse constitutions by country and year and crosscompare whole or parts of documents, search for words and phrases, as well as drill down into specific themes by topic. Amazing for history students! SpellUp SpellUp is a game where you correctly spell the words you hear (by speaking them out loud) and stack them to build the highest word tower you can. The higher the tower gets, the more difficult the word challenges. Both game designers and teachers helped to make Spell Up both fun and educational and Google strongly encourages teachers to try it in the classroom. Google Search Console Google Search Console allows webmasters to get the data, tools, and diagnostics needed to create and maintain Googlefriendly websites and mobile apps. Users can analyze clicks from Google Search, get alerts for critical errors or issues, as well as test whether Google can successfully understand site content. Great tool for student programmers!
