BRIEF STATEMENT OF FACTS

 

1. Between 2010 and 2017, Mr. Bruce McArthur killed the eight men included in
the indictment before this Honourable Court. Mr. McArthur committed these

eight first degree murders in ,the City of Toronto.

2. Mr. McArthur intended and caused all of their deaths. During each of these
murders, one or more of the following factors were present: planning and
deliberation, a murder committed in the course of sexually assaulting the

victims, or a murder committed while the victims were unlawfully confined.

3. After he murdered the men, Mr. McArthur, in an effort to avoid detection,
dismembered their bodies. He disposed of the body parts at the Toronto
residential address of 53 Mallory Crescent, where Mr. McArthur worked as a
gardener. He placed some body parts in planters on the property and others

were buried in the ravine adjacent to the property.

4. Mr. McArthur kept items belonging to some of his victims.

. During their search of Mr. McArthur?s bedroom, police officers uncovered a
duffle bag containing duct tape, a surgical glove, rope, zip ties, a black bungee

cord, and syringes. These items belonged to McArthur.

. Mr. McArthur killed Skandaraj Navaratnam on or about September 6, 2010.
During the investigation, into the murders, police seized a piece of leather lacing
from Mr. McArthur?s van which contained Mr. Navaratnam?s DNA. After killing
lVlr. Navaratnam, l\/lr. McArthur kept his bracelet. During a search of Mr.

McArthur?s bedroom, police found the bracelet.

. Mr. McArthur killed Abdulbasir Faizi on or about December 29, 2010. Mr. Faizi?s
abandoned vehicle was located near a home that Mr. McArthur had access to at

the time of the killing.

. lVlr. McArthur killed Majeed Kayhan on or about October 18, 2012. This
murder was sexual in nature. Mr. McArthur staged Mr. Kayhan after he
killed him.

. Mr. McArthur killed Soroush Mahmudi on or about August 15, 2015. This
murder was sexual in nature. Mr. McArthur staged Mr. Mahmudi after he
killed him. There is evidence a ligature was used during the murder. The
police located a coat in Mr. McArthur?s van which contained Mr. Mahmudi?s

DNA. This same coat is connected to the staging of other deceased victims.

10. Mr. McArthur killed Kirushna Kanagaratnam on or about January 6, 2016.

This murder was sexual in nature. There is evidence of the use of a ligature

during the murder. There is evidence of staging.

11.Mr. McArthur killed Dean Lisowick on or about April 23, 2016. This murder was

sexual in nature. There is evidence of the use of a ligature during the murder.
There is evidence of staging. Mr. McArthur also kept Mr. Lisowick?s jewelry. The

police found this jewelry in Mr. McArthur?s apartment.

12. Mr. McArthur killed Selim Esen on or about April 16, 2017. This murder was

sexual in nature. There is evidence of the use of a ligature and of confinement

with ropes during the murder. There is evidence of staging. Police located Mr.
Esen?s DNA inside Mr. McArthur?s van and on the murder weapon which was
also inside the van. Mr. McArthur kept Mr. Esen?s notebook. It was located

during a search of Mr. McArthur?s apartment.

13. Mr. McArthur killed Andrew Kinsman on or about June 26, 2017. This murder
was sexual in nature. There is evidence of the use of a ligature and of
confinement with ropes during the murder. The police located. Mr. Kinsman?s
calendar which had an entry for ?Bruce? on June 26, 2017. Video surveillance
showed Mr. Kinsman getting into Mr. McArthur?s van outside Mr. Kinsman?s
home on that day. Mr. Kinsman?s DNA was located inside Mr. McArthur?s van

and on the murder weapon which was also inside the van.
