Monday, February 25th, 2019 To the Office of the President: We, the Council of Coalitions (CoC) and affiliated student groups, are organizing today to call attention to Arizona State University’s consistent neglect of its marginalized student communities in academic, personal, and professional realms. Amongst these concerns, we are organizing to stand in solidarity with the Black and African-American campus community, who have repeatedly requested support from ASU Administration and have received no substantial follow-up. Specifically, the Dean of Students office has been made aware of these concerns since October 2018 and has failed to take the necessary measures to ensure the success and safety of our communities. We demand that ASU Administration acknowledges these concerns, prevalent in all our communities, and takes steps to design a timely and transparent plan of action to address the systemic inequities faced by marginalized students at ASU. Signed, The Council of Coalitions DEMANDS ● Creation of comprehensive professional development pathways for Asian and Pacific Islander, Black and African-American, Disabled, Indigenous, Latinx, and LGBTQIA+ students. ● Increased connection to tribal communities to better support the bridge to ASU and Indigenous student experience. ● Cultural training to address biases and prejudice in the distribution of the student activity fee. ● Sensitivity training for the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (SRR) staff. ● Recognition of the significance of land, ‘A’ Mountain, and its local tribal communities. ● Pay equity between the student leaders of the cultural Coalitions and their counterparts in the Sun Devil Leadership Council (SDLC). ● Expansion of the functions of the Situational Response Team to include cultural competency training and sensitivity training.
