On December 20,2018, I informed Common Council that was removing French and German from the November proposal. I?m writing today to report that we no longer need to pursue the potential layoff of tenured faculty members in the Departments of Art and Design, History and international Studies, and Geography and Geology. Since the issuance of Point Forward in November, we have received 14 additional faculty resignations and retirements, four of which come from the departments noted above. By eliminating these positions and including the related savings in our budget reduction plan, we will be able to avoid the layoff of tenured faculty members. Please note that, as with French and German, we will still explore the elimination or significant reconfiguration of the Art 2D and 3D, History, Geography, and Geoscience majors under System Administrative Policy 102, Section 3.4. The Consultative Committee has worked extremely hard putting in long hours to gather and analyze data, seek input from across campus, and formulate thoughtful recommendations. I encourage the committee to complete their report and provide input to me regarding program eliminations. Their work will help inform the process going forward and lam grateful for their dedication and contributions to this effort. Sincerely, Bernie L.
