LATIN The Detroit Latin School 11 March 2019 P.O. Box 2356 Detroit, MI 48202 info@detroitlatin.org For Immediate Release: The Detroit Latin School is seeking a state charter to operate a K-12 public school, creating a regional center for classical learning. LATIN’s program of liberal studies rooted in classical antiquity will be combined with advanced offerings in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics to make it a premier institution comparable with the best suburban publics and independent academies. As a chartered public school, LATIN will combine quality and equality as few schools can. It will be an intentionally inclusive meritocracy that reaches into every neighborhood and the surrounding towns to offer a singular level of academic challenge, tuition-free, to all “students of character who are eager to learn and willing to work.” Since October, leaders of Detroit Latin’s start-up team have worked closely with leaders of DPSCD to create a Joint Operating Agreement which would enable Detroit Latin to provide its distinctive programs of liberal studies and scientific inquiry within the legacy system. While good faith efforts were made by all, members of The Detroit Latin School Board have determined that it is in the best long-term interest of the School and the families it seeks to serve to operate as a chartered public institution within the State of Michigan. In making this announcement, members of Detroit Latin’s Board and the Latin School Civic Committee wish to thank Superintendent Vitti and Deputy Superintendent Merriweather for the vision and willingness to innovate for excellence they have demonstrated throughout this process. We will continue to work with the District in the spirit of “Kids First.”
