To Whom it May Concern: We are former General Members, former Executive Board officers, and former Founding Members of College Republicans United at Arizona State University (CRU), a splinter group of the College Republicans formed in January 2018. We have all left CRU or been forced out by current members for a variety of reasons, but we are writing this letter to draw your attention to the deeply unsettling, very alarming direction that this ASU Student Organization has gone in over the last few months. Richard Thomas, President and Founder of the club, has completely disregarded what this club was founded upon - mainly ideals of small government, liberty, and the model set by our Founding Fathers and has instead decided to turn CRU into an organization that accepts members even if they hold Anti-Semitic, White Supremacist, or Fascist views. These photos of both President Richard Thomas, Republicans United Executive Board Member Codey Friedland, and Republicans United Executive Board Member and Co-Founder Kevin Decuyper in particular we believe are the most alarming. The photos depict the two of them at Mr. Friedland’s house posing for pictures mocking the victims of the 2017 Charlottesville Car Attack and can be seen as an official CRU endorsement of the White Supremacist, Neo-Nazi views that were displayed at the rally and subsequent car attack. The two of them are holding gallons of milk, which are subtle nods/dog whistles toward white supremacism and racial superiority. According to the New York Times and Dr. John Novembre, a University of Chicago evolutionary biologist this is a dog whistle used by White Supremacists. (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/17/us/white-supremacists-science-dna.html). In addition the two of them are also holding tiki torches, clearly referencing the tiki torches held by White Nationalists at the Charlottesville Rally which would go on to leave 1 person dead and more injured after a terrorist plowed a car into protestors. (https://www.cnn.com/2017/08/12/us/white-nationalists-tiki-torch-march-trnd/index.html). The pair also posed for Richard Thomas’ photo in front of Mr. Friedland’s car which was of the same type of vehicle as the Dodge Charger driven by the attacker. Him standing in front of the car smiling just demonstrates the lack of remorse they have for the victims of this attack and humor they find in it. (https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/ct-james-alexfields-charlottesville-driver-20170813-story.html). The most disturbing development, we believe, is that Mr. Thomas is wearing an official College Republicans United at ASU T-shirt. This shows that CRU is at very best tolerant of and at worst encouraging of terrorist attacks and white supremacist rallies like we all witnessed in Charlottesville last year. First Photo of Richard Thomas holding a tiki torch, a gallon of milk, and posing by a Dodge Charger (the car that a white supremacist used to run over and kill a women in Charlottesville, Virginia) while wearing a CRU at ASU shirt. Second Photo of President Thomas Photo of Mr. Codey Friedland - an ASU graduate who calls himself an advisor to CRU and serves on the Republicans United executive board. We hope action will be taken against this student organization at ASU and hope an investigation is launched into the discriminatory and exclusionary practices, views, and ideals of this student organization as clearly demonstrated by the attached photos. More photos displaying homophobia, racism, and various other exclusionary beliefs of club members have been attached to this document but unfortunately there were so many we were not able to sort and dissect all of them. Dozens of more examples can be provided upon request. Helpful links to decipher the lingo and phrasing used by the group have been provided here: https://www.adl.org/education/references/hate-symbols/echo https://www.theguardian.com/technology/shortcuts/2016/jun/12/echoes-beating-the-far-righttwo-triple-brackets-at-a-time https://gizmodo.com/why-are-trump-supporters-offering-people-free-helicopte-1829705238 Rick has also shown to be racist, as evidenced by the following when he refers to Childish Gambino’s (an African American rapper) work as “degenerate monkey filth” in a private message to a member. The member did not realize that he was referring to Gambino’s work as being a “monkey filth” due to his skin color until later. This Huffington Post article does a great break down of why comparing African-Americans to monkeys has long been a racial slur: https://www.huffingtonpost.co.za/2018/01/15/comparingblack-people-to-monkeys-has-a-long-dark-simian-history_a_23333383/ In this photo you can see Rick Thomas and the aforementioned Codey Friedland mocking Emma Gonzalez and David Hogg, two survivors of the tragic Parkland High School Shooting. These are the same two people who seemingly mocked the victims of the Charlottesville Car Attack. The link to the video Rick posted in the CRU Member Chat can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejvjQ7LWW4w The video displays many disgusting views points. In particular, it is filled with anti-semitic, disparaging remarks about David Hogg, a survivor of the Parkland shooting in Florida. Another concern of ours is that CRU has repeatedly tried to bring Alt-Right, White Supremacists to speak on campus with one such person being Baked Alaska and Milo Yiannopoulos. Baked Alska (Real name Tim Gionet) marched at the Charlottesville rally and more information about him can be found here: https://www.dailydot.com/upstream/trump-troll-baked-alaska-charlottesville/ Below you can see screenshots of Club President Rick Thomas advocating for eugenics in both CRU chats and his personal tweet. He also calls homosexuals degenerates and says they are deformed as well. We believe these practices are exclusionary towards any non-heterosexual students at ASU and have damaged the reputation of anyone involved in the organization: This next series of photos shows club advisor and ASU graduate Kevin Decuyper in a Neo-Nazi group that praises the actions of Nazi Germany and is filled with racist and anti-semitic views. You can also see President Rick Thomas “heart reacting” his comment. The triple parentheses mean Jewish people. See this wikipedia article for more information on that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_parentheses Here we also have Alumni Club Member and Republicans United Executive Board Member Kevin Decuyper explains that he uses CRU to expose more and more people to his “more extreme views” as well as using Candace Owens (a black conservative commentator) as “camouflage” following his rant against Jewish people (whom he refers to as “J’s” as well as the “(((threat))).” He even goes on to brag about how he founded an organization (referring to CRU at ASU) and that he gets the support of the right-wing community by hiding this extreme views as his. The group is called “Trad Muarsnebel”. “Muarsnebel” is “Lebensraum” spelled backwards. You can see what Lebensraum means here: 03:19 3 ?43 33%- Trad Muarsnebel Muarsnebel. 1 hr 4? When these secret racist Facebook groups and posts were brought up to Richard Thomas by former members of the club (who subsequently resigned, were bullied out, or forced out), nothing was done. Kevin Decuyper remained on the executive board of the College Republicans United. Here you can see Rick Thomas below trying to bully a member into apologizing publicly and admitting he was wrong in order to not be ostracized from the club. He also insists that Kevin’s neo-nazism should have been kept a secret. He says that they “retaliated” for Kevin being called out. Cody Friedland and Kevin Decuyper (both Republicans United Executive Board Members) continue to serve as admins in the official club chat despite not being current ASU students and holding white supremacist and racist beliefs: In short, we are forwarding this information today because we think that ASU students and faculty should be aware what this group is doing. It is filled with white nationalists and neo-nazis posing as principled conservatives and Republicans, and these people are giving a bad name to ASU when they utilize its funding for this club. They will do everything they can to cover up their views, as evidenced by instances of purging and bullying that took place when members of their club took a stand against racism. It is also important to note that according to the College Republicans United Club Constitution, they have broken their own rules or have at best enforced them in a completely arbitrary manner (we would provide a copy of the Club Constitution and cite it as evidence, but we unfortunately do not have access to it). We believe that this should not go unnoticed as the people are not only dangerous to ASU students and faculty but also to society as a whole. Please also know that Rick Thomas has a very bad history with students at ASU, and there are many others who would likely be willing to come forward and vouch for his bad character. Thank you for taking the time to read all of this letter, and we hope that the ASU community will now be well informed of the actions of members of this club. Regards, Former Members of College Republicans United at Arizona State University
