March 28, 2019 Dear Plessy Families, As part of an investigative journalism project in 7th grade, one of our students is studying lead in drinking water. During his investigation, he used an at-home lead water test to check the levels of our water. The results came back indicating a presence of lead and/or pesticides and recommended additional testing. While the at home test used does not meet scientific standards and does not scientifically prove the presence of lead, we believe it important to take such possibility seriously. I spoke with Orleans Parish School Board once we received the home test results and they will install water filters at Plessy on Monday morning. In the meantime, Plessy will provide students with bottled drinking water. We will have cups available for students to use, but to reduce the environmental impact, we are asking families to send students to school with a water bottle where possible. We greatly appreciate the investigative work of our students and the urgency Orleans Parish School Board has shown in responding to the issue. We will continue to provide updates as necessary, and as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to me at any time.
