San Diego State University originally reported that it would temporarily close the building to regular use, effective Wednesday, March 13. The university has since extended the time to allow faculty and staff to move from the building. The building will be closed to regular use on Wednesday, March 13, but you are allowed to remove items from the building until 4:30 p.m. The temporary closure will now become effective on Thursday, March 14. This message will help students, faculty and staff to understand the building’s temporary closure, and provide further direction. Deans are encouraged to share this message with school directors and instructional faculty; faculty are encouraged to share this message with their students; and students are asked to share this message with classmates in classes held within the PSFA Building. Faculty and staff are urged to continue moving all items from the building as soon as possible, and are urged to lock away any remaining items or belongings in lockable cabinets and drawers. If you require building access on or after March 14, arrangements have been made to support you. Please contact College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts Acting Associate Dean Bey-Ling Sha at bsha@sdsu.edu. Additionally, Instructional Technology Services (ITS) is collaborating with Enrollment Services to identify learning spaces for faculty and students, and will also offer drop-in training for displaced instructional faculty who may wish to utilize Zoom (web conferencing) during the temporary building closure. The temporary building closure is the result of ongoing roof work associated with the PSFA Mechanical and Electrical Upgrades project. Strong odors associated with off-gassing roofing materials have been noticeable in and around the PSFA Building. Dry and hot weather conditions tend to make the odors stronger and more bothersome and, while not known to be toxic, the odors are disruptive. Different individuals have different sensitivities and may react differently to the odors. Symptoms may include irritated nose, throat and mucus membranes, and may cause headaches. Given anticipated change in the weather, with forecasts of higher temperatures projected beginning later this week, SDSU opted to temporarily close the PSFA Building. We understand that this construction project has greatly affected you and others. As we take your health, safety and concerns seriously, we want you to know that we are are extremely apologetic for all inconveniences this construction project has caused. To further inform you, SDSU has prepared a list of Frequently Asked Questions about the project, the building closure, existing plans to relocate all building occupants and locations for the relocated classrooms.
