April 3, 2019 Dear Parents, Indian Creek Elementary School and the MSD of Lawrence Township are committed to providing a safe learning environment for our students. We affirm this commitment by notifying parents of events that affect campus and/or community safety, as we work in partnership to support the wellbeing of our students. On Wednesday, we were notified by one of our students that a gun was brought by another student on to school property. We quickly identified the student in question in order to locate the weapon. The weapon was ultimately located on the school bus, never having come in to the building. Administration and the Lawrence Police Department are working with the student and family to determine the source and intent of the weapon. We will then proceed in following with the district’s established conduct policies around weapons on school property, and take this situation very seriously. Because of a strong relationship with our students, we were able to uncover, investigate and intervene in this situation. We recognize that students play a vital role in maintaining a safe school – they hear the rumors, see the threatening behavior and understand the risks. Students, parents, staff and community members should use this incident as an example of the absolute necessity of reporting any and all situations they are made aware of. We must work together. I would like to thank our students for coming forward and sharing this information. As we are teaching students responsibility and leadership, it is important that they be able to share concerns with teachers and other adults. Please contact me directly if you have additional questions about this incident. Thank you for your support of our students and school. Kevin Kemper Principal
