Michael Carome, M.D.
Director, Health Research Group
Michael Carome, MD is the director of Public Citizen’s Health Research Group (HG) and joined our staff in January of 2011, initially
serving as deputy director of HRG. Carome is an expert on issues of drug and medical device safety, pharmacy compounding,
Food and Drug Administration oversight, healthcare policy, and the protection of human research subjects.
Carome was a senior leader at the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) within the Department of Health and Human
Services. He retired from the U.S. Public Health Service in 2010 after serving more than 24 years in uniformed service, attaining
the rank of captain. As OHRP’s associate director for regulatory affairs from 2002 to 2010, he became a nationally and
internationally recognized expert on the protection of human research subjects. He also was a staff nephrologist at the Walter Reed
Army Medical Center’s (WRAMC’s) Department of Medicine from 1992 to 2010.
Carome has been quoted in publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Associated Press, Reuters,
U.S. News and World Report, USA Today, The Boston Globe, British Medical Journal, Science, The Tampa Tribune, The Chronicle
of Higher Education, and Clinical Trials Advisor. He has appeared on National Public Radio’s Diane Rehm Show and NBC Nightly
News.
Carome earned his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed his internal medicine
residency and nephrology fellowship training at WRAMC. He has been a guest researcher at the Renal Cell Biology Section of the
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. He currently is a fellow in the
American College of Physicians.
