WHAT IS SCOTT’S LAW?
625 ILCS 5/11-907(c)

Scott’s Law was named after
Lieutenant Scott Gillen of the Chicago
Fire Department who was struck and
killed by an intoxicated driver while
assisting at a crash on the Dan Ryan
Expressway. Scott’s Law mandates
that upon approaching any stationary
vehicle with flashing emergency lights,
including commercial trucks and cars,
all approaching vehicles shall:

reduce speed
 change lanes if possible; and
 proceed with caution.
